i am looking to but my nephew a rifle, he is 15 years old, i bought my son a cricket and he is 6 so i do not want to insult him with a cricket but i also do not have alot of money to spend on the rife, what would be a good option for a first time shooter on a budget?

They start in the $220 range. There are rifles for less but I'm not familiar with them so I can't speak for them. The Savage 22 always looked a little toyish to me.

The 10/22 gets quite a bit of love on this board too:

You can't go wrong with a 10/22.

I love my Ruger 10/22's (I own 3 of them). They work perfectly. I am an old guy and would never consider a 10/22 anything but a great 22LR rifle. The factory sights could use some improvement, but to me the Ruger 10/22 is the best 22LR rifle on the market.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. IMHO a 10/22 should be in everyone's safe or on the range all night with as many OEM magazines you can afford., both the 10 and 25 round mags work great. I've owned, traded, bartered more than I remember, I have the Stainless with Composite stock, 2x7-28 Leupold Scope, I'm probably going to swap triggers for the new one thar Ruger is selling. This one I'm keeping! I'd also like to get one with nice wood too. Has anyone added the Ruger Laser

Another option if you want something a little beefier than a .22 is a SKS. You can still find those in the $250-350 range, if you shop around, and they're a good rifle to teach someone on. I bought my 18 year old son one as his first rifle for around $350. An added benefit is that they fire the 7.62x39mm round, which averages between $0.20-0.25 a round. This means that at some retailers you can buy 1000 rounds for less than $250 and lately its been easier to find than .22 has. In either case this and the 10/22 would be great options as a first rifle for someone in their mid-teens.

That new Ruger is not cheap. And you will need to a good scope (I recommend a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP-ERB-1 (MRAD) and TPS steel rings). And a Harris Bi-Pod. At $1399 (MSRP) for the rifle, you are probably looking at a $1200 street price, $90 for the rings, $110 for the Bi-Pod and another $950 for the scope. All total $2350 plus tax... Not too bad a price for what you get. Add in a flash suppress / muzzle brake, and your probably probably near $2700 for a nice platform.

That really is cheap for a great long range setup.

Don't forget extra magazines....more like $3200, that's kidvid you only want about 20 mags, I know that's a little conservative but start somewhere. Oh yeah you may want to buy some ammo too.

Like I said that's sniper rifle cheap. If we were talking a standard off the rack mass produced AK or AR (ie. Century or Core 15) at that price then someone would have their intelligence insulted. For a rifle of that quality $1200-1300 is cheap. Thanks for ruining my joke btw, lol.

rwhite, it uses Pmag's SR/LR308, which come in 10 and 20 rd versions... For a bolt gun, I think you can get by fine with 8 mags.
I have a semi-auto set up and I think 16 x 20rd are enough. So toss in another $30 for a sling and $100 FOR 5 x Pmags (it comes with 3)... still under $2850...

Here is a link to the Ruger video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15YkjtV_ud0

Quite the rifle, 5R rifling included... adjustible trigger pull... WOW... This will set the standard for new long range shooting (over 1000 yds). The only downside to this rifle is that I am likely to see one at my spring shoot, and it should be superior to my DPMS set up... argh...

That's my point. Other rifles of that quality can run twice that price or more.

Would probably want optics on it, which brings it up another $300-$400 with rings.
