Virginia to stop recognizing concealed carry gun permits from 25 states
Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) announced Tuesday that Virginia will no longer recognize concealed carry handgun permits from 25 states that have reciprocity agreements with the commonwealth.
Under the policy, Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home.
Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements can prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed handgun.
“While you are here, you are subject to the commonwealth’s gun laws,” Herring said in a news conference. The change means Virginia’s standards for obtaining a concealed weapon are applied “evenly, consistently and fairly,” he said.
The move is part of a broader effort by gun control advocates to tighten restrictions without going through GOP-controlled legislatures.

Well I'm sure he means well, it is so typically stupid to think more laws will help anything. It will just create more stories of some law-abiding CCW from a neighboring state, will now be arrested and charded. Gee whiz!

As always, more and stricter rules don't work. At least he kept Utah.

Mine would still be good, I live in West Virgina, but I wonder for how long. True Virginians, and the state's neighbors, can thank the DC beltway invaders for idiots like this being elected.

They said it was because the 25 states listed have weaker requirements, but we have tougher requirements in Illinois and they don't recognize ours. So that is not true.

I truly don't know why they are dumping 25 states for their CCW, but any restriction at this point, (like the melting points in Illinois) smells fishy. To me, it seems like another win for anti-gun people. To me, they are trying to be cleaver about how they can get the guns out of people's hands.

I can't speak for Virginia but West Virginia doesn't because Illinois won't recognize ours. It's a quid pro quot deal for WV to recognize out of state CCW permits.

That's a false reason as well. When does it stop being a chicken and egg thing as in which came first?
If we don't recognize yours because you don't recognize ours and you don't recognize ours because we don't recognize yours....huh?
So all these reasons, like the rest of gun control, are pretty much lies and what we know to be true is they chip away at everything they can with the ultimate goal of total confiscation.

Pure example of POLITICS at its best; negotiations using FREEDOM as the bargaining chips. Truly disgusting.

That might benefit you but I'd still be screwed because Illinois won't recognize my permit or issue me one of theirs. If you want Illinois permits recognized here, do something about your state! Until your state changes don't expect my state to do so. Your state is penalizing the people of mine. It's not about gun control in this state; it's about fairness. In your state it's about gun control.

In Illinois is it about money. They will issue you one, just for $350 for out of state.

According to a friend of mine, it's next to impossible to get one of those out of state permits. He wanted to get one for a hunting trip so that he could carry his revolver. They told him he wouldn't have the permit in hand until after his trip was over and that was if he was approved. To add to that, according to a story on Ammoland.com from 2014, the only states that qualified for out of state permits are Hawaii, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Virginia, but that may have changed since then. The law that allows for these permits states:
Quote:The Department shall by rule allow for non-resident license applications from any state or territory of the United States with laws related to firearm ownership, possession, and carrying, that are substantially similar to the requirements to obtain a license under this Act.
At the time the story was posted, the above states were the only ones that met the "substantially similar" qualification.
