Various media are reporting that law enforcement officials will announce Wednesday that the shooting death of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was a suicide.
Fox 32 News, CBS 2 Chicago and NBC 5 Chicago cited anonymous sources. But officials with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, which has been investigating the fatal shooting for the past two months, are not confirming the information, task force spokesman Christopher Covelli said Tuesday.
Lake County authorities will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. to reveal "significant new information" about Gliniewicz's death, they said earlier.
Gliniewicz, 52, was found dead in a marshy area Sept. 1 after radioing a dispatcher that he saw three men -- two white and one black -- acting suspiciously at 7:52 a.m., authorities said.
He called back three minutes later and said the men ran into a swampy area and that he was in a foot chase and needed backup.
Officers found Gliniewicz shot 14 minutes later, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m.
Police have since said Gliniewicz was shot twice with his own gun, once in his bulletproof vest and a second time in the chest, over his police vest.
Officials also said he was out of his car and on foot patrol for 20 minutes on Honing Road before his death.
However, very few additional details have been released about the case in the two months since Gliniewicz was found dead. The lack of information has led to speculation that the death of Gliniewicz could have been a suicide or accidental in nature.
The news conference will be at the Round Lake Beach Civic Center, near the corner of Mallard Creek Drive and Hook Drive in Round Lake Beach.

Filenko said Gliniewicz was using the Explorer fund "as his personal bank account." He added that $250,000 flowed through the account over seven years, and investigators estimated Gliniewicz took about "five figures."
Electronic messages deleted from Gliniewicz's personal and work cellphones helped investigators crack the case, Filenko said.
Filenko said Gliniewicz elaborately staged a conflict with three unknown offenders because he wanted to go out "a hero." Gliniewicz took his .40-caliber weapon, pointed it at his chest and pulled the trigger in a swampy area at the east end of Honing Road in Fox Lake.
He said the investigation was the most comprehensive by law enforcement in the history in Lake County.
Gliniewicz, a 30-year Fox Lake police veteran, was found by officers fatally wounded shortly after 8 a.m. Sept. 1, authorities said. Gliniewicz had called in a report to emergency dispatchers that he was in a foot chase with three suspicious suspects described only as two white males and one black male.
About 14 minutes later, Gliniewicz was killed by the second of two gunshots -- the first shot was to the left side of his stomach and was stopped by his vest -- that struck him in the chest over his bullet proof vest.
The discovery touched off a massive manhunt that involved scores of heavily armed police, who used helicopters and dogs to search for the three suspected gunmen.
There was an extensive emergency response across the village. Village hall, schools, and the Fox Lake Public Library were locked down and closed during the search, and several roads were blocked off by police while the suspects were hunted. Metra commuter train service on the Milwaukee District North Line was suspended, but resumed that day.
More than 100 officers from local, county, state and federal agencies were involved in the manhunt, authorities said. Police were on foot and in helicopters and used canine units brought in from various jurisdictions, including McHenry County.

I want to find it hard to believe and think that the department is just covering something else up but with so many different agencies like FBI, US Marshalls and many crime labs it would be impossible to get all of them to go along with it or to fool them all. Sad situation regardless.

The only way to "know" it was a suicide is to get that info from him, so unless he left a note or told someone, it is conjecture at best.
You may be able to say if it was suicide the evidence would look like this, but that is still conjecture.
