Remember several weeks ago when I told you that Mr. Mock and I were going to stop our contributions to Wounded Warrior Project and look for a new military/veteran charity to give to? If you don't remember why we did that, you can catch up right here.

After reading this article, I'm convinced more than ever that we made the right decision. According to that sourcelink, Wounded Warrior Project isn't just turning away gun owners/vendors, but they are also turning away churches.

Liberty Baptist Church in Florida had signed up to do a fundraiser for WWP, and expected to bring in around $50,000. Instead, they received a notice from WWP which stated in part, "We must decline the opportunity to be the beneficiary of your event due to our fundraising event criteria, which doesn’t allow community events to be religious in nature.”

Yeah. Because of COURSE they don't want to accept donations from God-fearing, patriotic, military-supporting people. That makes perfect sense.

Before I had learned or done anything related to guns I went to an NRA weekend at Cabela's in Hoffman Estates. The folks who run the Bristol range had a table there. They support and hold events for the WWP. In the course of the conversation something came up regarding the firearm policy with WWP (I don't remember exactly what and it could have been something in some literature). Of course, it made no sense given what the Bristol range is. The explanation was similar to the email exchange in the article. It simply smelled funny.

I don't know what political views the people of WWP, but here is a warning about liberal charities.

I was approached by a recruiter representing a famous charity. They use the software I program in. The job included 5 weeks vacation the first year, a salary 20% higher than the market rate, etc. I was a bit surprised.

This showed me the charity was being used to provide a comfortable living to the employees and managers with "some" of the donations going to the cause.

Researching who you donate to is very important. We know hypocrisy lives and breaths in liberal politics, it stands to reason it lives and breaths here as well.

When thinking of giving to a charity I use a site like http://www.charitynavigator.org for just this reason

Unfortunately in today's world of large charities, the cost of running them and feeding their quest for ever more money, means less goes to those that truly need it. WWP is no different. Sometimes charities lose sight of why they exist. People would be aghast at the cost of running most large charities. The United Way, WWP, The Red Cross, etc all have large staffs, which cost them money.

The bigger the charity the less that trickles down.

That is true, but if a for profit company gave benefits like that, the charity liberals would call them greedy. When the charity liberals pay benefits like that to themselves with your donations for which they pay no taxes, they call it compassion.

Of the big ten charities, WWP ranks 4th in money spent on the actual people it is intended to help. I wish United Way and American Red Cross ranks as high. But as I said most charities spend more than half their donations raising more money and to have a large hired staff. There has always been a question of the hired staff's pay being considered as 'help the ones the charity is designed for'. And in many charities this is a very gray area. Like Hillary's charitable foundation and sub foundations, they actually spend less than 2% of people who need help. The American Red Cross has many store warehouses, do the people that run them count as helping people or not.

Overhead at charities has always been an issue.

I've heard too many horror stories about WWP from guys at the local VA who when they requested aid to pay a bill were sent a hat and blanket and never heard from WWP again. I won't give them money.

I think the Glen Beck charity is a very good one. And I am sure closely watched unlike Hillary's, which is a 300 times larger. But all LARGE charities are going to be problematic, like organized religion. People to run them cost money, and many are of dubious value. Even having accountants to collect incoming donations and bank them cost money. That said, I still donate to organizations like the Red Cross, WWP and others. It is sort of like comparing government spending on the VA. How much actually reaches Veterans? They spend money on everything from buildings to lawn service. Only 38% of their budget is directly spent on salaries and supplies used in healthcare, but the hospital administrators and janitors have to be paid too.

It has become cool to "give" to charities as a lazy way to pretend you are doing something.

I was approached by a job recruiter for a well known charity that uses the software I program in. They were offering a salary 20% higher than the going rate, 5 weeks paid vacation the first year, etc.

It was clear they are using the charity to create a comfortable living for themselves, and oh yeah, help a few people in the process.

As always, follow the money. And it isn't necessarily extravagance or corruption, it can simply be like the above mentioned charity where they are taking advantage of the cool factor, i.e. the "market" that wants to give.

The sad part is these same people will condemn the "greedy" business people who do the same thing in a for profit business.
