Folks we need to get our kids to continue shooting. Take a kid to the range should be the slogan for 2015. It truly the heritage of the founding of this country.

Both of my sons were taught with a BB gun at the age of 3. Then a 22 was purchased for them. Next they were introduced to a 9m then a 45. I removed the curiosity stage regarding guns at an early age and taught them respect for the weapons. My oldest is now an forest engineer, loves hunting and his guns. My youngest is into the banking world and although not like his brother still has a respect and full understanding of guns/weapons. Education!

Got my first BB at 5, pellet gun at 7, 12 GA and 12, .303 at 16.
50 guns later, at 47, and never shot anybody.

I was taught at a young age the dos and don't of handling a firearm and to this I'm 45 and still respect firearms

My dad taught me that way with many things, and the best part is it still holds true! Teach respect and the responsibility at a young age and it helps.

Agreed. Starting them out young is a Great thing. I always had cap guns, bb and pellet guns growing up before the real ones.

My first experience was at about ten, when my dad let me shoot his 22: bolt rifle, then his 32 special Winchester rifle. I was afraid of his 12 guage. That was at a small outdoor range near Almena, WI. My dad was allowed to have his guns at a very young age and had moderate parental supervision. After that he and I barely ever went shooting again. He still had his guns but has no ambition to ever shoot them. Too bad.

I still remember as a young boy the smell of shooting my first round of 22LR on a cool fall day. Never forgot it.

I actually was able to shoot 22lr on class field trips to a place called Fallen Timbers and in Scouts when I was young. I want to say the earliest was somewhere around 3rd-5th grade. The 9th grade class field trip also included firing a shotgun though most of the kids who hunted in my class has already completed Hunter's Safety in 7th grade.
