After having taken two AR training classes with Robb and Mike, it is clear that I needed a good quality RD site for my AR. The AR I bought does not allow for iron sights, as the front block is too low, so really the only sighting method that works, IMO, is to put a red dot sight on.

I'm somewhat of a cheapskate on accessories at times and I've learned my lesson twice now. The first time, Robb had to lend me his EO Tech as my iron sites didn't allow me to hit the broadside of a barn, and so I bought an $80 red dot, which initially worked fine, but broke after about twenty rounds, right before the Advanced course started. So, Robb loaned my his EO Tech again! (Thanks Robb!)

Well, there's no way I'm gonna pay for RD Scope that's worth more than my rifle, so I've settled on the Vortex Sparc II. It has good reviews and has a great warranty as well. This will have to do the trick and I hope it lasts the test of time.

Vortex Optics Sparc II 2 MOA Red Dot Sight (SPC-402)

I've yet to receive it in the mail, and have been waiting nearly two months. Reportedly on back order. I hope to get it early September.

Anyone have thoughts about this scope that have actually used it on an AR?

I guess I am old school. I was always taught that STEEL rings were needed on semi-automatic rifles. Aluminium was good enough for bolt guns. The reason being the force that the bolt is thrown back with. I recently tried a single mount aluminum base for a AR-15 from Vortex, and it seems to be fine. And an aluminum bracket and same set up on a VEPR in 7.62x54R. Both have now held zero for a 100 rounds and the VEPR even seems to hold zero attaching and detaching.

I guess old school ideas are falling by the wayside to modern materials. Rings are never are area to go cheap on.

OK, I have put these on and take them to McMiller for sighting in. What a HUGE improvement these are over the awful sights the factory 10/22 comes with. The rear sight is about 7.5" father back, and really improves the view. These are GI peep sights. I can now highly recommend these. The install is easy, (you need a brass punch, and some lock tight. They were not cheap at $70, but they really are quality made (metal). I was hitting much smaller groups with irons, and they do not sacrifice any handiness of the 10/22. RECOMMENDED!

I have a Simmons scope on my AR. It's been awesome as far as clarity and holding zero. However, a few trips to the range ago I noticed that the horizontal reticle lines weren't aligned any more. The right side was slightly lower than the left. I figured it was always like that and I never noticed.

This last trip over the weekend, there is now a noticeable gap between the upper vertical line and the center of the reticle. I also noticed the left/right adjustment knob is loose, but I can fix that with an allen wrench. It's going to be sent back for repair or replacement.

Like I said, it's a great scope otherwise. I was wondering if anyone else has run into any problems with them?

This is the RDS that I have on my C39. It is very well made. It doesn't have the fancy push button zero adjusting but it also doesn't cost $500+. It has 12 brightness settings, which are controlled by the + - buttons on top of it. I find settings 5 and 6 to be perfect for day or night shooting. It is compatible with night vision optics on settings 1 and 2. Zeroing is done by use of the two screws contained under the caps as per usual. What looks like a large knob is the battery compartment. I've used sights from both Eotech and Aimpoint and I actually like this one better.

I need opinions.

As a training tool I purchased a Mosin last year. I own no other rifles, so this was my first and only.

I am looking to practice/learn sighting, etc..

I am considering trying to add a scope to this some time this year.

Brass Stacker sells what appears to be a nice scope mount that allows mounting without altering the rifle (so it can maintain its originality). It also allows continued use of the iron sights while mounted.

I do not have a sniper version of the Mosin, so it is not a bent bolt.

All the above means the scope will be forward and therefore requires a pistol scope for the eye relief.

As the Mosin is quite powerful I do not want a cheep one that will fall apart, but I also don't have a budget for this of much over $200.

I have done some on-line study and research and found two that seem to fit the bill. Both are describe as tested for powerful pistols, one even mentions it works well with 454 Casull.

So I am looking for opinions of the following two or any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
