Hello fellow preppers. I am thinking of starting up a Meet Up Group as follows:

I know there are many secretive Prepper organizations out there. I seem to run into guys that are preppers but are not at liberty to discuss it. What I am thinking of is setting up a Ham Communications / Prepper forum. No meetings, just a simple exchange and postings of Ham times and frequencies so people can communicate with like minded groups within local radio range. A simple Group name, maybe a town, In the event of SHTF a simple way to contact like minded people. Date, Time, and frequencies they will use. Nothing more. Most Prepper Groups are far to small to be sustainable in a Grid Down situation. These groups might want to form loose affiliations, and this is a way to do it.

Any such interest?

A few weeks ago, I got to test some gear I had not planned on testing. My Furnace died on a Saturday night (it was 10-12 degrees outside), and they could not get a new Furnace until Monday morning. I tested a wood barrel stove, which I fired up in the basement. I tested the venting. The stove worked perfectly, and threw off a lot of heat. That with the fireplace kept the house around 50-55 degrees until Monday morning. The main lesson I learned is to keep firewood closer to the house.

So I now recommend Preppers, planning to bug in consider a Barrel stove or two. The kits to make them are about $45. The venting cost me $60 or so (Big R, carries a surprising number of options). I used a 30 gal. steel drum for mine. A 55 gallon Drum would be better. If I can find a flat plate and weld it on top, I could actually cook on that.

Consider a backup heat source.

On another note, this Sunday was an interesting prepper experience. The furnace completely went out, as the heat exchanged failed. So the house was a balmy 54 degrees when I woke up Sunday. After building a big fire in the fireplace and testing a barrel stove I made the house was at 55 degrees and has maintained that. It gives you an appreciation for what they did before furnaces and gas heat. One thing I have learned is I would go through a lot of firewood in a winter.

I know we never will be in the same shape as when we were 25. But we can get in good enough shape to help out, and we all need to be able to walk 6-8 miles per day with a 40 lbs. pack. Actually practice that, in extreme cold and extreme heat. Old guys probably have skills they have forgotten all about. We can teach others. But, the whole point of this article is that when you are on the wrong side of 50, try to stay in reasonable shape. The lives you save might be your families. If you are overweight, get in shape.

Our band uses a 4 tier food startegy...

1. SOS rations. Good for bug out bags, car trunks, or prepositioned buried buckets on your bug out route. Cheap, extreme shelf life, and compact. Not the lightest in the world but not heavy. Not very tasty either.

2. Freeze Dried buckets. Good tasting, light weight, long shelf life, Expensive, usually not enough calories per serving, but essential. This is your best option if forced to bug out from a BOL.

3. Canned goods (Both #10 and regular). #10 cans have long shelf life. They can be dehydrated or not. Basic staples and hard to find stuff (powdered eggs, powdered milk, powdered butter, etc). Not cheap, not necessarily heavy.

4. Bulk foods, geared toward feeding larger groups, mess hall style. After all you cannot have 8+ groups all cooking separately. Cheap (20# bags of rice are under $10), plentiful, and many have long shelf lives. Learn to can.

What does your group do for food? How much do you strive to stockpile? What special items do you store (coffee, chocolate, etc.) What do you guys do?

Ok, lets face it we preppers rarely do a lot of testing, and many of us are on the wrong side of 45. Here are some things I do to test my preps and learn what to add or delete from my BOB's and EDC's.

I hike 12 miles with my BOB. Now it is not that tough, it is a day event. But it is not like a military hike. The trail I do this on is the Bike trail from Ringwood to Richmond, PERFECTLY level, no ruts, or obstacles what so ever. My hope is that if SHTF and I have to walk, I can do 6-8 miles a day. overland. Try it, you will appreciate WOOL socks and good boots. You will ask yourself about what you can do to lighten your BOB.

The second thing I do is test my winter camping gear. Adding simple boot insulation soles has proven to be a god send for extreme cold camping. I set up the tent in my back yard and try not to go inside for any reason from Friday Evening to Sunday afternoon. Try it, you may find all sorts of improvements you can make that are low cost.

I cannot stress this enough, learn to use your gear and test it out!

Many people store up and are using essential oils for a future that may or may not be a world of hard to come by medicine.

I belong to a group of ladies that are homesteaders. One of the ladies is a practicing nurse, that is VERY open to and using alternative ways to healing. One thing that she is always warning us about is the use of essential oils used internally.

8 Tips for Buying and Using Essential Oils

She says that this is a more practical way of using them. This is the short of it.
"Along with the international aromatherapy community, we say that you should never use essential oils internally without the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner. While there are some essential oils that can be used safely, this is the safer path to take, especially without skilled supervision. Essential oils can be incredibly caustic, causing burns or irritating the mucous lining of your digestive tract."

My friends best advice, seek the Lord first and ask for His help. Get your wellness from actual food or dried herbs. You do not have to worry about the strength of the oil, since essential oils are several times stronger that the herb itself. Stay away from artificial, try to get grass fed or free range meat, use coconut oil, olive oil and stay away from vegetable oils, drink raw milk. Use turmeric root in foods. Try to find a doctor who is open to alternative medicine.

She has other advice too, but these are the main ones. As always, check with your doctor. He or she may not know anything about it, but hopefully, they will help you in the adventure of better health, and stocking up supplies to help during a disaster.
