good question. But it would be helpful to know what use you plan for it (target, self-defense, concealed carry) and how much hand strength you have, and will your wife also use it. As for me, after my military issued 1911 .45 cal, I puchased a newly released Ruger GP100 .357 magnum (1994) because it felt good and balanced in my hand, knock down power, stainless steel, and it also fires .38 special ammo. I bought a shoulder holster as I also carry it when I go into wilderness areas for protection. I also bought two quick load devices. It looks new even today. The grip on mine is the rubber with wood inserts. Very nice revolver. I think I aid about $350 new, but today new would be about $700. As for a semi-auto (SA), I prefer a .40 cal open carry, or a .380 cal for concealed carry. Both of mine are Walther P99QA .40 and PPK/S .380.
