It is like ssphoto stated, your homeowners may have a clause saying that you don't forfeit your liability coverage during a reasonable defense of self and property. Homeowners tops out at 500k or 1 million, if you have your coverage even set that high, and then the umbrella policy adds an additional 1 million or more. Mine costs less than $200 a year.
Dutz, I double checked, it is in defense of your property. If that means inside of the house only or in your yard, that is a question for your wife. I'm certain it doesn't cover walking down the street.
