Ronald Reagan was a democrat. It was his time as president of the screen actors guild when he saw first hand how the soviets were trying to manipulate our society through infiltration and control of of the movie industry (something we now see was not only real, but quite successful). Reagan himself was approached by them. This is what opened his eyes and turned him to the republican party and forged his understanding of the evil empire they were.
This is what Margaret Thatcher was referring to when she said the difference between Bush (Sr.) and Reagan is Bush was given what conservatism he had (which was not much) and Reagan came to it himself. Bush was a purveyor and Reagan was a believer.
It is a common tactic among democrats to attack the person when they cannot attack the ideas. That is what this is, nothing more.
And remember Garner was from a generation where democrats were for the common man, not today where they are for tyranny and big government.
JFK and Garner both would be republicans today if you took away the clinging to history the blue collar dems do and just look at life as it is now.
