Dutz, I am the nut 4-5 miles beyond the cribs in Lake Michigan in the Kayak. Even in late August in a normal year, I see people far out without proper equipment or training. And I can tell you that a wet suit is REQUIRED on Lake Michigan year round.
In the last year, about 3 miles out encountered a Kayaker in the drink. He asked me if I could help him back into his Kayak. I not only helped him, but showed him how to use the equipment he had to get back in the kayak. I asked how long he was in the water, his answer about a half hour. Hyperthermia can occur in under 2 hours, even in the of the heat of summer. Wet/Dry suit required year round, on Lake Michigan.
But proper training is the key. I told him he really had no business being out beyond a hundred yards of shore, without knowing how to get back in, or without a wet suit.
Had I, or some other boater not stopped, he could have been in trouble.
I launch out of Zion state park, if you are interested in a little kayaking this summer.
