Good question. Sporting Arms And Manufacture's Institute (SAAMI) standards for 9mm Luger max out at 35,000. CIP the European version of SAAMI tops out at 34,080... so why is NATO hotter? Essentially because the NATO standard is 36,500 or just think of it as 9mm +P. +P means "added pressure". If the gun is not rated for +P I would not run it. It will cause more wear and tear sooner on the gun. The SAAMI standards are downloadable from SAAMI at this link:

http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_.../index.cfm

I have not been able to find the same documents from CIP but admit I have not looked to hard as SAAMI is what I load to..

News flash.... keep your eyes peeled, Acme is going to come out with coated bullets. No lube means no smoke and they will shoot anywhere from 3 to 8 grains lighter in terms of additional powder you will need because the coating will make them slicker in the bore and leave sooner like a lighter bullet.
