I've found that it's best not to skimp on Scope rings either. I have a favorite brand, that are rock solid TPS and I always get the steel rings. Not cheap, but very rugged and they do the job even with the heavy recoil.

Glass is just an area where it does not pay to go cheap. There are plenty of outstanding scopes in under $700 (and we talking Leupold here). The rule used to be that you would spend as much on optics as the rifle, but I sure today that optics are far less.
