Not true, historically they started as the socialist party and changed their name to the progressive party when socialism fell out of favor. Keep in mind that this was not the socialist party as would be seen in Eastern Europe, which led to the formation of communism in the eastern portion of that continent. An easier way of thinking about it would be to call progressive thought socialism lite. The Fallopian Socialists were opposed to the extremes that the eastern European communists were willing to go to. It is the progressive party that was responsible for the massive regulation, nationalization of public lands, and the formation of unions that we see today. These are very much the tenets of socialist thinking. Socialist/Progressive thought wasn't historically limited to the Democratic Party anymore than it is today. A major personality in the early progressive movement was former Republican President Theodore Roosevelt. When he lost the Republican nomination in 1908 he formed the Bull Moose party and ran as a progressive in 1912. If you look at his policies during his presidency you see socialist thinking. He was the one that started the nationalization of private and state owned property to form national parks. He was also a major supporter of eminent domain. Both of those policies are socialist in nature. In the 1912 election there was a true Eastern European style socialist running as well. That candidate was Eugene Debs. This election was the high point of socialism/progressivism in a presidential election cycle as all 4 candidates running in the general election, from 4 different political parties, had tendencies towards this line of thinking. The least progressive among the candidates was the Republican incumbent William Howard Taft, who tempered his progressive leanings with a sense of constitutionalism. Woodrow Wilson, who won the election, fell between Roosevelt and Debs ideologically even though he ran as being between Taft and Roosevelt ideologically. This would also be the last time that an "independent" candidate truly had a real chance at the presidency. Roosevelt finished second to Wilson. The history of the progressive party was one area of study in the government classes that I have taken at Liberty University.
