There is a lot of “proof texting” showing up in the social media. That is a person has already formed an opinion and then goes to the Bible to find a verse to support their stance.
One of the passages being used is a parable from Luke 10. What is the context of this passage? First, Jesus is speaking to the religious not the government. He commands His follows to be benevolent not the government. The church has let the state take over one of it tasks. Next the parable is a strong condemnation of the religious. The priest was coming down from Jerusalem. He had just been to worship. The Levite was going up to Jerusalem. His purpose was to worship. Neither would soil their hands to minister to the hurt man. Now a Samaritan (someone hated and despised by the Jews) gave aid. Notice that he tended to the man wounds and took him to an inn and paid for his care. He did not invite the stranger into his home.
Basically, God ordained 4 major tasks to man. He is responsible for providing for his family. This would include parents, children, his bother’s widow, etc. Next he is responsible to help care for the household of faith and lastly to strangers. The second task is to be the leader of his family. He must be devoted to his wife and train his children in the nurtures of God. The man is charged to be righteous and upright man before the world. One last thing, charity was to be temporary. It is ordain that man work and not be a burden on society.
One last thing. The main responsibility for the state (feds, state, county and local) is to provide safety for the citizens. A perfect example is in the book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament. A report was brought to Nehemiah that the people who had returned were in peril and great trouble. Jerusalem with it broken walls and no gates was an embarrassment. A city without walls was defenseless. The thieves could enter at will to rob, murder, rape and commit acts of terrorism. I visited Jerusalem in 2013 and was impressed with those magnificent walls. If a city without walls is defenseless then a country without borders is unprotected and exposed and just as defenseless..
What would Jesus say today? To me, as a Christian, He would ask, “Have you given your all as the widow with the two mites?” To the liberals that are pushing to give the ‘refugees’ a free ride, He would ask, “Thanks for your devotion to the strangers, but why are you murdering so many of your defenseless unburned children?”, The state, He would ask, “Why have you given safe sanctuary to your enemy and forsaken those who fought to keep this great nation free?
I did not supply all of the Biblical references to help shorten the post. I can do so if needed.
