I am going to have to disagree with part of your disagreement. 
"Sophistication in your language, your vocabulary; " is a sentence fragment. The word Sophisticated is capitalized, so we must assume it is the beginning of the sentence.
Even if it was intended to be two sentences, i.e. something like "You need sophistication in your language and vocabulary; how you write and speak is very important." you still need an "and" instead of the comma between language and vocabulary, and you need a subject and verb.
Having said that, "You need sophistication in your language and vocabulary; how you write and speak is very important." is a much stronger sentence and I agree that it does sound like what she was really trying to say. You were able to infer that despite her lack of sophisticated language usage. Your reading is more sophisticated than her writing.
