Keep them clean and they'll last forever. Just pour a little warm water or Windex down the barrel every 100 rounds or so when at the range and give it a cleaning when you get home. The main enemy of AK barrels is when you start getting ridiculously high round counts through them. There are people out there that have put 100,000+ rounds through an AK. At that point the barrel will have almost no rifling left if any. The Vepr isn't as susceptible to that as it uses the thicker RPK style barrel and has deeper rifling as a result. I think I'd start to keep an eye on the barrel in the rifle if I got anywhere near 25,000 rounds let alone 100,000.

As you can see from that list there is a lot of 5.45x39mm out there including offerings from Hornady, which are ridiculously accurate. The next AK I get is either going to be a Krinkov or an AK-74 pattern.
