A couple of buddies of mine recently tested a helmet, level IIIa against a variety of hand gun rounds. It stopped a .357 mag, .45ACP, .40SW, 9mm and 22LR. Interestingly enough a 10mm round did penetrate. We only tested 9mm, .40SW and .45ACP with hollow points, it stopped them all. We did this at exactly 12 yards. The .357 mag did dent it badly but didn't penetrate. 9mm from a carbine did, however. .223, .308x51, 7.62x39 rifle rounds easily did. If we had a second helmet, I'd like to test the rifle rounds at 200 yards, but I am thinking the results would be the same.
