I grew up in Cali where in the mid to late 60's we did not lock up all the time and we were constantly out after dark alone.
At one of our local ranges here (small town of 22k) it is very common to leave your gun on the bench/in the rack while going back to your vehicle. I just make it a point to let the RO know what I am doing. At the other range I shoot at I have left to go to the bathroom or back to my truck several times with no issues and there are no cameras. Only exception is that when we are shooting at one of the ranges we always introduce our selves with each person that is there.
The last time I went shooting in CA (June 2015) we had four rifles with us and two of them were on the bench behind us and two of them were with us in use. It is a busy place and at least, according to m brother, he has never had any issue with theft.
