I would call that the mid-western mindset, i.e. you trust people to be honest. I spent my childhood in Southern California and we didn't get into a parked car without checking the backseat and under the car, we never went next door without locking the house, and never went out after dark alone, not even next door. 40 years later I still tend toward things like that.
