It has become cool to "give" to charities as a lazy way to pretend you are doing something.
I was approached by a job recruiter for a well known charity that uses the software I program in. They were offering a salary 20% higher than the going rate, 5 weeks paid vacation the first year, etc.
It was clear they are using the charity to create a comfortable living for themselves, and oh yeah, help a few people in the process.
As always, follow the money. And it isn't necessarily extravagance or corruption, it can simply be like the above mentioned charity where they are taking advantage of the cool factor, i.e. the "market" that wants to give.
The sad part is these same people will condemn the "greedy" business people who do the same thing in a for profit business.
