I hear you there I was in the same boat. If the cost is a concern if you don't mind Mr asking why are you looking at such a large round?
mostly for fun at the range, and i know my 9mm in the army fired at an engine block would not slow it down but the 50 would stop it. i think the 454 is a good compromise that will stop a car if needed in a prep for anything scenario.....but mostly for fun at the range. but looking in to it 357 or 44 would do as well
