When Atlantic Firearms has them in stock they're about $100 more than they charge for the C39v2. BTW, if getting a C39 I recommend the v2 over the v1. The v2 has a better barrel, finish, and FCG than the v1. Anyway here's Atlantic's page for the 23" Vepr that they have in stock for $850:

I happen to be like you and like the looks of the stock furniture. I think I would refinish it but I like the overall design of it. In case you were wondering, the receiver has that slight bulge under the ejection port because it uses a RPK style receiver, which is basically a thicker AK receiver made to withstand the pressure and heat of sustained full-auto fire that one sees from a machinegun and not a battle rifle. The bulge is part of the receivers re-enforcing.
