Of the rifle calibers I have fired, I really like the 6.5x284. It's a very accurate round with not a lot of recoil. I've only gone out to 300 yards, but the gun shot better than me.
I just shot a .300 Win Mag for the first time over the weekend. Accurate and fun to shoot, but it was a heavy gun. In a light-ish rifle, it would probably be a handful.
.308 seems to be a pretty good round in any gun for long range shooting.
