Honestly, I think you can't go wrong with any of the major manufacturers with a solid reputation. I have only been shooting a couple years, but I have rented and shot several dozen in my quest. I now have 3 hand guns and they are all Springfield's.
The reason is Springfield's fit my hand best. I once did a three-way compare/rent in one session between the XDM, Glock, and Baretta 92SF. The Baretta had the most solid feel, especially racking the slide (probably a lot to do with being all metal), and was the most accurate for me to point and shoot - not concentrating on site picture. The Gock was the fastest to reacquire a site picture. I really like their sites. But the XDM felt best in my hand and was overall the most natural feel.
