PALATINE, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A northeastern Illinois woman shot at a burglar in her condo and held him at gunpoint until police arrived, authorities said Friday.

Noah I. Perlman, 33, was charged with residential burglary, possession of stolen property, forgery of a stolen check and possession of a controlled substance. He was expected to appear in bond court Saturday and it was unclear whether he already had an attorney.

Police said he had been burglarizing units in the same complex where he lives in the northwest Chicago suburb of Palatine, The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reported.

In Thursday's burglary, the 34-year-old resident noticed her front door was damaged when she arrived home and found the man holding a hammer and a large screwdriver in her bedroom, according to police.

She told police that she retrieved a handgun and, fearing for her life, shot at the man but missed. She held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Officers found stolen property during a search of Perlman's unit, including computer equipment and an electric guitar, police said in a news release.
