Which to get? - jfergus7 - 02-25-2016

Alright I figured out which rifle I am going to be purchasing this weekend. I want it to pick off the coyotes at my hunting property and want to be able to use it when deer season comes.

Question is should I get a 308 or a 270? Any thoughts?

Either of those will do the trick but have you considered something in 7.62x39mm? The ammo will be cheaper for eliminating the coyote problem and there are premium brands that work well for deer. I personally have taken to using my AK for both of those needs.

With that having been said, out of the two you enquired about, I'd go for the .308. I like that round better than the .270.

There is no substitute for .308 Win. It is my ammo of choice. The .270 is very flat shooting at distance. But for hunting deer, will you ever take a shot over 200 yards? I prefer .308 over any caliber. But for coyotes, I think I'd prefer .223/5.56. I think I'd pass on the .270, but if I lived in Texas, I might like it.

Try your C39v2 out on the coyotes. It will do a number on them and the ammo is cheaper than the .308 or 5.56. The ballistics for the 7.62x39 are similar to a .30-30, which many consider the best brush rifle caliber ever made.

I can agree with that. I think the C39v2 is an excellent hunting rifle! A 10 rd. magazine is best for that.

I like using my v1 for coyotes because around here they are not always encountered individually. They're usually 3, 4, or sometimes 5 to a pack. They're also not as afraid of people as they should be and I like the idea of having more than 3-4 rounds when coming across them.
