Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - AcilletaM - 07-26-2015

Anyone have one of these licenses? Mine arrived Saturday after roughly a month wait.

RE: Type 3 FFL Curios and Relics - BelieveIn308 - 07-27-2015

hmmm... A Civil War Cannon? Always liked the look of a 3" Rifled cannon

RE: Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - AcilletaM - 08-01-2015

Really? Nobody else wanted to skip background checks, take possession immediately after paying, or have your purchase shipped directly to you for any gun over 50 years old?

RE: Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - BelieveIn308 - 08-01-2015

I find background checks to exercise a Constitution right, a non-starter. And heck for a Civil War cannon, I wanna fire it right away, now what range will let me shoot a 3" rifled cannon?

RE: Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - AcilletaM - 08-01-2015

Why do you keep mentioning the cannon? This applies rifles and handguns older than 50 years, so today it would be anything made before 8/1/1965. So WWI and WWII rifles, old 1911s, old Colt and S&W revolvers, etc. For these guns the BATFE considers you no different than a full fledge Type 1 FFL like RDA.

If you buy a Colt Official Police made in 1955 from RDA you can take possession of it right away because to the BATFE it is a FFL to FFL transfer. If you bought it from a out of state wholesaler, it can be shipped directly to your house.

Ah... I thought the type 3 license was for other antique weapons... And I was sorta hoping it was a cannon... Just to see it... (That and I am bit of a smart *****...)

Well, in theory, you are supposed to wait 3 days to take personal possession. Smile

Oh, I guess if the license is in your name. Believe it or not, but even though i own 100% of Red Dot Arms, Inc, I have to wait 72/24 for a firearm transfer.

RE: Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - AcilletaM - 08-04-2015

Yeah, I believe you have to wait because logic plays no part in lawmaking. Wacky

The license is in my name. I can buy and sell but I cannot conduct business using it. I can only use it to enhance my collection, define what that means as you will. As a Federally licensed collector I can bypass some of the state laws that affect private purchasers like background checks and waiting periods and I can buy in other states and not go through another FFL. I do have to keep a bound book.

I am a bit surprised that has not be adjusted to some form of online/remote electronic storage. Books can get "accidentally" destroyed.

(and don't call it storing in "the cloud". There is no "the cloud", just one of my pet peeves.).

RE: Type 3 Federal Firearms License - Curios and Relics - mikereddot - 08-05-2015

There are forms of electronic, but it's still called a "book".

The law changed and you can no longer store in on a "cloud", it must be saved on a individual computer. Prefer the cloud way.

I looked at a software version but they are really geared towards businesses.

Got my 03 C&R FFL lic about 2 years ago. Quite easy to get. Just print/fill out the form, add your payment method ($30 for 3 years), and mail it in.

Here's the application form link: https://www.atf.gov/file/61516/download

Surprisingly, it only took 2.5 weeks before I received my license. Your license issuance may vary depending on the backlog.

Your Lic. will come with an ATF handbook. I HIGHLY recommend reading through all of it. You'll also need to keep a log book. I keep my logbook electronically via an Excel template (ATF approved) and also print the spreadsheets and keep a hard copy in a loose 3 ring binder.

*** If you'd like a copy of the Excel logbook template, just respond here and I'll post it up. I called the ATF about this and it was approved.

The lic comes in quite handy if you're into C&R since you can have the firearms shipped directly to your home - no transfer fee's, no waiting, and just convienent. Additionally, you get dealer pricing for many C&R firearms - particularly through Century or SOG.

This is NOT an 01 FFL lic. So the license is for collecting. Doesn't mean you can go into the business of buying/selling firearms. But you can trade or sell to "enhance" your collection -again, HIGHLY recommend reading through the ATF 03 handbook - they'll send you a packet with your license.

Strange, I didn't get a handbook.

Hmmm. My 03 FFL came with multiple handbooks and a DVD. If you're near Lake Villa, IL you're more than welcome to borrow it.

I definitely didn't get a dvd
