RE: My C39 - nickdemo - 06-28-2015 Very nice! RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 07-22-2015 Okay, I finally got to do some target shooting with this bad boy. I only got to put around 100 rounds down range thanks to a sudden downpour, which also destroyed my paper targets so sadly no pictures to accompany this post. I was using Wolf WPA 124gr steel cased bi-metal jacketed hollow points. I love theses rounds. They make good varmint rounds as well as decent range rounds. All shooting was done from about the 100 yd mark. The largest group was fired right before the rain started and the wind had picked up. The 7.62x39mm round can be noticeably effected by wind so keep that in mind. This 5 round group came in at just over 3". The smallest grouping came in at 1.75", which is pretty good for what is basically an off the rack AK. My average groupings were in the 2.25"-2.5" range. This isn't bad for an AK rifle with a chrome lined barrel. The C39v2, with it's 4140 nitrided barrel is even more accurate than the C39v1 I have. The RAS47 with a 4150 nitrided barrel is more accurate still. With more American makers, such as DDI and Definitive Arms, getting into the AK game with mass produced rifles, using similar barrels to the v2 and RAS47, good things are on the way for the American AK buyer for sure. RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 07-24-2015 I forgot to add that I didn't have any issues with FTE, FTF, or double feeds using the Tapco mags that came with the rifle or the surplus Romanian steel mags I bought for it. RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 07-24-2015 I love Pmags for my AR type platforms. Have you used Pmags in the AK's? RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 07-24-2015 No I haven't. The first gen for AKs aren't that good beyond a range toy though from what I've heard. The next gen that Magpul comes out with is supposed to be steel re-enforced and better things are expected from them. The problem is they keep delaying their launch. Right now the best mags for the money are the Romanian surplus which can be had for around $9 a piece. Even the Tapco mags are only good for range use and were only in the rotation because they came with the rifle.. I wouldn't use them in the field. RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 07-24-2015 Very useful information... You would think there would lots of surplus ones. RE: My C39 - Brian S - 07-24-2015 Great info! Thanks for the post. I got a good deal on the Romanian ones when I bought them. Paid $60 for 8 plus 2 canvas pouches that each hold 4 mags. If you shop around you can find similar deals on Yugo/Serb, Bulgarian, and Hungarian surplus mags. Avoid ones that come from Asia unless they specifically say that they're Chinese. Korean and Vietnamese mags aren't very good. Bulgarian steel re-enforced or lined polymer mags are good, too. If you want to get a 75 round drum get a Romanian, either the old or new style are both good. RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 07-24-2015 BTW, the following is the ammo that I was using in my rifle: http://www.sgammo.com/product/762x39/1000-round-case-762x39-hollow-point-124-grain-wpa-wolf-military-classic-made-russia-b RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 08-20-2015 The AK guy I know, loves the Silver Bear ammo. I have tried a few different brands, and to be honest, I really could not tell the difference shooting them. The steel case stuff seems to work great. I have only fired the AK types at the 100 yds range. I will probably buy an C39v2 sometime in October. Then I will have a new toy! RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 08-20-2015 Like I said in the ammo post, Bear (brown, silver, or golden) is great for target shooting. Why I like the Wolf WPA HP is because in my experience it has better expansion than the Bear HP or SP. Since I use my rifle for varmints, as well as target shooting, it fits my needs better. If all your doing is shooting paper or steel the Bear is great stuff. When you do get your rifle I do suggest before buying a large quantity of a particular type that you buy a box or two of different brands and bullet types that interest you to see which it digests the best. This is an AK thing and a given rifle can be finicky towards one ammo type. A lot of AKs hate SP ammo for example while just about any FMJ will work in any rifle. Some might like the SP but hate HP. As with any firearm you also need to see which brand the gun likes. RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 08-20-2015 Oh, I have a enough guns to know that. Some of my shooting buddies have the exact same guns, some with consecutive serial numbers that don't like a particular type of ammo, where mine likes it fine. So I always do that... But it is good advice. RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 08-20-2015 I figured that you probably did. I tend to post with a larger audience in mind as well. ;) RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 08-21-2015 rwhite135, I appreciate that. I have learned much reading your posts of AK style and SKS type rifles. I really never had an appreciation for them before this forum, and in a few weeks, I will own one! You will note, that I understand all that goes into a rifle purchase, scope mounts, stock options, magazines, and ammo. I have even studied the sling options in posted pictures. The rifle is just the first step! RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 08-21-2015 If there is one thing that my Criminal Justice Writing professor wanted us to learn in her class it's that you can never post too much information, only too little. I've taken that to heart with a lot of topics that I post about. Firearms in my opinion is one of the most important to follow that rule with. RE: My C39 - BelieveIn308 - 09-23-2015 ![]() OK, I have had my new toy (CAI, C39A2) out to the range... She shoots well. All the magazines seemed to function fine, even the Magpul ones. I have no issues with any ammo. I had a set of Magpul Zhukov furniture, which I put on. I had to cut the front Hand Guard retainer off (You can buy a replacement one if you want to go back to the wood furniture). The front hand guard needed a little tweaking to fit, because I didn't want to cut the sling loop off the gas block. A small notch in the plastic, and a 1/4" x 1" slot in the aluminum heat shield. I didn't notice any issues afterwards. The rifle didn't seem to care what ammo I put through it. It did seem very accurate at 100 yds. I also added a Krebs replacement for the Shepard's hook and a upgraded safety. My C39 - Brian S - 09-28-2015 (09-23-2015, 04:31 PM)BelieveIn308 Wrote: Looks great! I remember when Krebs was working in a gun shop in Niles in the 80's. He did work on several handguns for me and I still enjoy them today. One is a work of art and doesn't get to the range very often....it's what I refer to as a .look at me gun. Cost more for the work than the gun did. RE: My C39 - rwhite135 - 10-01-2015 Nice, you got the full Zhukov treatment going on there. I was tempted to go with the Zhukov handguard but didn't want to cut the retainer off my rifle. Those bolt on replacements don't work quite as well as the originals. I was tempted to put the Zhukov-s on mine, as well, but it's just too much work on the v1. The nice thing about the v2 is that it takes pretty much all AKM furniture with little or no modification needed. RE: My C39 - The Sheriff - 10-17-2015 Welp, after a few range trips now, I don't plan to go back to the wood furniture. But I was not sure I would like this set up till I tried it. I have found that the stock is exceptional and works great set 2 notches longer (Photo is one notch). The think I like about the furniture is the hand grip. I like the set up. The gun is still very tight. I need to take it to the range more. By next summer I will have a much more in depth review. It is amazing that it doesn't care what ammo I put through it, or what magazines I use. I have maybe 350 rounds through the rifle and nothing but flawless operation. |
