Besides a pistol, Do you have a shotgun or AR-15(AK) in your bedroom for self defense? I have a 870 tactical with my Glock G19. I was thinking about using my rifle, but I'm afraid of over penetration so I stays in the safe. What do you guys use?
12 ga. is always loaded up with bird shot, because a slug or 00 buck is going to penetrate pretty terribly.

No. 4 Birdshot?
I have number 6 in my 870 tactical, with a strap holding another 17 rounds. Half are #6, and buck shoot. . I have a 9mm and and my better half has her 686 .357 loaded with 38sp. The AR 15 is under the bed with a few mags fully loaded in it's case. What i'm a afraid of? NOT A SINGLE THING!
hmmm... I keep all but the XD in 40S&W in the safe. In the home, I feel that is really all I need. With JHP's and 4 magazines, that should be enough.

If I feared anything, I could always have more in a couple minutes. Or if I though I might need more firepower, I'd deploy more firepower. Maybe I should leave the shotgun in the bedroom...
I've been keeping my XDs-45 handy, but when I get my Mossberg I'm looking into how I want to have it set up when I'm not using it for hunting. I've heard #6 Birdshot, but haven't looked into different rounds for defense much yet. I have heard slugs and 00 Buck being bad choices because of penetration, which I would agree.

As far as a couple different brands or types of ammo to try for starters, any suggestions?
You can always get a saiga shotgun and get the best if both worlds
This will be a great question for the shotgun class on Saturday!
Do you have a shotgun? And also can you please give a review of the class, I am interested
I think there are still openings...I signed up yesterday
I have an 870 Remington shotgun. I have never fired a shotgun in 30 years of shooting. I'm taking the class this Saturday, and really looking forward to it! I already know I will like the class. Steve New is the instructor, and he has quite a passion for firearms, and is a wealth of knowledge. Just about every time I go into RDA I learn something. It will be a good time!
Steve New is an awesome instructor.. He is so patient answering any questions! But I haven't fired a shotgun either, and I'm planning on bringing the Mossberg 535. So we'll both be in for a treat!

Yes on all account's...
I have no issue using the shotgun. However, having the shotgun available can buy you time to get to the rifle if needed. Pistol is a backup till you can get the shotgun, which is a backup till you can get to your rifle! It all depends on what rounds you choose. Speaking of...

Anybody have preferred defense rounds for shotgun or an ar?
If I was going to use my shot gun for home defense. It would be the 20 gauge, honestly my preference would be something like a bean bag round. The guy doesn't know it's a bag round, and I would prefer nit to kill some on. But in a shtf scenario 12 gauge buck shot. For the ak, it eats anything, so ny favorite would be anything
Seems like a ltl round would just tick someone off...

hmmm... After taking the shotgun class, I have a new appreciation for them as hunting weapons or close in defense weapons. They are fairly easy to keep on target. I had never fired one before and still was able to hit 2-3 (out of 5) clays in each set. Recoil was less than I thought it would be. They would be great for any kind of bird hunting. I think I would still prefer a rifle for bigger (or smaller game). But for home defense (or urban areas) a shotgun is an excellent choice.
I was expecting to like the shotguns, but turned out to be more than I thought! The only thing that I'd like to get for it is a shorter barrel. With a rifle slug barrel I think it gives many more options, with the greeters distance. The only problem would be switching back and forth. At least in the shtf scenario.

As far as the bean bag though, or ltl rounds in general. I wouldn't mind having one loaded, more as a warning. After that if they proceed I'd say follow up with bird shot.

Are bean bags available for reloading?
I wouldn't use them in reloading for defense... just because of the legal BS that could follow if they were used on someone.. But I'm sure you could find something or make something that would work just as well
