Full Version: Bore sighting is helpful, but only to a point

I know this from experience, but a lot of people believe having their rifle bore sighted will have them shooting bullseyes on the range. Not the case.

I was up at McMiller today. There was a guy a few tables down shooting his new AR (and a nice looking one, I might add) for the first time. He was shooting at 100 yards and couldn't even hit the 2'x4' target board. He had it bore sighted at Cabelas. After some conversation, he agreed to take it to the 25 yard range to at least get on paper and build from that.

Consider this a PSA. Bore sighting has it's uses, but it just gets you in the ballpark. Ammo costs too much to waste a box or two and not even make a hole in a target. Start short, dial it in, then go long. Your wallet will thank you.

(BTW, if the guy in question is a member here, I'd like to know how it worked out.) Smile
I hear you there, I had the same issue with my ak. Couldn't figure out where it was hitting. Went to artical 2. Started at 10 feet it was really high, so just adjusted it moved it further back until I was dialed in.
Good advice... See the tread under 'Ask the Experts' about a similar experience I had, and Ryan's GREAT advice. In the end I did adjust the sight ever so slightly.
