A perk is not a perk if you wouldn't pay to use it otherwise.

If I went and had to wait for something and they said I could wait in the lounge but it would cost me $5, I would laugh and say no thanks. Ergo, to me, it is not a perk.

If they said I could make reservations, but it would cost $2 additional to reserve then I might. I wouldn't for $10, but maybe $2.

The perks at GTR cost me $250 per year. The 10 "free" hours are really the first $200 of the $450, so they are not free. They are prepaid.

At 25 visits that's $10 per visit to reserve. I wouldn't pay that by itself, so like the lounge, it's not a perk. If I only went 10 times per year and just use my prepaid hours then I just paid $25 per hour to reserve. That's insane.

At OnTarget with the half-price all year I pay $250 up front, i.e. prepaid. If I use all 25 prepaid hours then it is free to reserve.

OnTarget is considerably cheeper. Having said that, I have never joined, as I only had 4 incidents last year where a reservation would have made a difference, and I did not go 25 times.

Right so are you retired military and that is why you got the rate or did they extend the definition of retired to include discharged vets?

I just called them now you should bring a Military ID and/or DD214 to sign up.

Other that that, I'd call them to ask more specific questions. 847-782-8888

I just called GTR today to ask about shooting shotgun there (being they're right down the street from me and if I'm too lazy to drive to an outdoor range, once I find a good one).

They said you CAN shoot shotgun there; only restrictions are:
1. gun must have a sight (pretty much any kind, but they want to avoid shooting the ceiling)
2. Double Aught Buck min, or Slugs

FYI....

I asked about the sight, and the guy implied any kind of sight, versus no sight at all.

Okay so a bead sounds like a site. If I ever make it out there I will call first to specifically ask. But thanks

Went to GTR yesterday to shoot my FNS9 and S&W 686. Just walked right in and got a lane without any trouble. Nice friendly staff and seem to be very helpful. I did think that what you got for your membership seemed fairly limited, and you ended up paying the same amount for range time as if you were not a member. If I were closer to McHenry, I'm sure I would go there, but seeing as GTR is a lot closer it makes sense to go there. Having said that Bass Pro is the most convenient for me, and even though the rules can be a bit picky the price is the best around.

I ended up doing the best deal around. I have been shooting IDPA with the McHenry IDPA group, and finally joined. It is $30 per year and I get half price range time in OnTarget, which is the member price without paying the $250. I just can't reserve, but will live with that for saving over $200. Smile

I haven't been to that one yet either but thought if I get to GTR tomorrow I might head down to Maxons next week to check it out. I like going to different places and seeing what they offer. Typically I go to OnTarget but want to try somewhere new!

Took a trip over to GTR just to check the place out. I had some guns with me in the truck but just didn't have time to stay that long but I will definitely be going back. The entire place was so nice. I guess compared to all the other ranges that we have in the area(OnTarget aside) just about any new range is going to be nice. The spectator area with the big leather couches and viewing windows were real nice. I didn't get a chance to check out the Lounge yet because it isn't open just yet but will be this week. After talking to the gentleman for quite some time I am actually thinking of joining for the Patriot membership. Looking forward to going back soon and actually getting to try the range out.

I've been there several times now and thought about the Patriot membership and right now have trouble seeing the payoff in value for the $200 I'd have to fork out. Right now, if I went once a month at an average of $22 a visit, that's $264; I'd save $64, that's too tight for me to jump on board. I may change my mind later, but now look to spending more of my dime on RDA's Skills and Drills - more fun and better training overall.
