If I pick up a weapon in either .308 or 7.62x54r, I'm planning on putting one of these on it:

With it you don't need a separate RDS. Just set it to 1x and you have your red dot. At 6x you can easily hit targets at 600-800 yards.

I don't think 6 power is really enough for 600-800 yards. On an AR15 a 6 power scope is plenty, but not with a .308 or 7.62x54R. IMHO. Can this scope deal with the constant bolt recoil of the heavier round on a semi-automatic? I've found MANY sub $300 scopes cannot deal with the beating a semi-auto dishes out. It might be an interesting scope for a say Ruger GunSight scout rifle (magazine fed, .308, 16" barrel bolt gun).

6x takes more practice than what most people are used to but it can be done. The reticule of the scope has it's pre-calculated adjustments ranged out to 800 yards. This scope is made with the heavier recoil of the .308 round in a semi-auto in mind. It also works with the lower powered .223 and 5.45x39mm because at short to medium ranges they have the same flight characteristics of the .308 or 7.62x54r rounds. They also make a version for 7.62x39mm/.300 BO but that thing sold out so fast they haven't been able to make enough yet to put it back in the inventory. Primary Arms makes their stuff to take a beating while keeping the prices low enough so as to be affordable. I'm really liking their stuff that I've had my hands on. If longer ranged shooting with that one gives you pause you could get this one for $10 more:

I think I'd go for the 4-14x44, but I've seen way to many scopes that work fine on the AR-15 platform get destroyed on semi-auto .308 platforms. Many cannot handle the force of that bolt coming back. Mind you these scopes are fine for bolt guns, but I have to caution you on semi-auto 308 platforms. I've seen scopes moved from .50 cal bolt rifles fail pretty fast on semi-auto .308's. Still if you find one that can stand up to the beating, that' great. But I doubt you will find one sub $700. Just my experience. Although I have seen SWFA hold up pretty well, and are probably a good value. If you are putting a scope on .308 semi-auto platform, there is something to be said for that lifetime 'no questions asked warranty' some companies provide.

But for $280, it might be worth a flyer.

The owner of Primary Arms did a video of himself using the 4-14x scope on a DPMS .308.

That might convince me... I do like the idea that it's mounted a bit farther forward, must have decent eye relief. Looks to be about 4" in the video... Still pretty impressive shooting at 600 yds...
