Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
So he wanted to change the 2nd to say: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.”
Less we forget that in 2011 46,047 people died from poisoning, while 591 deaths were from accidental discharge of a firearm. Injury by firearm 32,351. All this according the GOV's own stats.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
The Militia being defined as... 10 US code - 311

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

This change would legalize all gun ownership for age 17 and up...
This change would VOID all state laws regarding firearms...
Since serving in the 'unorganized" militia is 24/7/365...

So be careful what you wish for. But there is NO REASON to add those 5 words, unless you wish to create a totalitarian state!

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" - Thomas Jefferson, 1 Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

"Man has the rights he can defend" - Danton.

When only cops have guns, it's called a "police state". Love your country, but never trust its government. -- Robert A. Heinlein.

"The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good" -- George Washington

"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed." -- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it." -- Abraham Lincoln, 4 April 1861

And least you think PEACEFUL people think differently... "Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest." -- Mahatma Gandhi

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." -- John F. Kennedy

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves ... and include all men capable of bearing arms." -- Senator Richard Henry Lee, 1788, on "militia" in the 2nd Amendment

"To disarm the people... was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." -- George Mason, speech of June 14, 1788

"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." -Col. Jeff Cooper

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
"Well regulated" means "in working order, calibrated correctly, and functioning as expected"

The purpose of the 2nd amendment is to make sure the civilian part of the militia could pick up arms and maintain well regulation along side the army and guard. This grew out of Washington's and the other general's experience of trying to bring the civilians up to speed while already engaged in war.

Anyone who thinks adding these words makes a difference or sense is too uneducated to be of any use in this discussion. Given the fact it is hard to argue with Steven's education or credentials we can only assume he is simply a liar.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
"well regulated" had a completely different meaning to our founding fathers. As the Militia provided their own weapons for the most part, "well regulated" meant that the government would regulate what powder and ball it provided for service. Almost all militia regulations had to do with supply back in the day. States supplied regulations as to uniforms, and call up standards.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
Dutz, I have to question his education. Didn't he read anything about US History? Didn't he read the reason the Second Amendment was written as it is? The words were carefully chosen.

I have to assume he is a leftist, bent of forming a totalitarian utopia, like Stalin, Hitler and Mao...

I assume he is a believer in big government, wanting to manage every aspect of your life, and not someone that believes in Freedom and Liberty. So I have to question his education. Some people consider studying Karl Marx to be an education.

I'd recommend he read Washington, Jefferson, Mason, Madison, Lincoln and other Patriotic Americans, instead of his socialist heroes.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
The basic premise is what happens when you have all powerful government. The arrogant, elitists live the good life on the backs to rest. Those FORCED to work to support this society are of course disarmed, as they would cease working to benefit the socialist scum. Of course all rights have ceased to exist under this 'utopian' system as the rights only belong to the 'armed'.

Without the means to defend ones rights, they will of course vanish.

He was a lawyer for twenty one years and five years as a associate justice of the Supreme Court and this is the best he can come up with on how to stop the gun violence. If he wants to sell this he needs to have about six children around him and sell it as it's for the children. What a joke this guy is.Curse It

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
And really... This guy a Supreme Court Justice? What part of "shall not be infringed" does he not understand? I bet this moron also believes government can force you to buy a product from a third party against your will, like Obamacare. Sorry, but this guy believes in totalitarian big government and not in Liberty and Freedom.

The sooner he dies, the better off the country will be. I have not read more twisted logic since reading "Mein Kampf"...

Well, using his logic we could also clear up the situation by removing the first 13 words and the comma Thumbup

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
What is really funny is why would he even bother suggesting to change the wording? Stevens, and his liberal friends on the court, have never demonstrated any real concern about what the constitution actual says.

They declare things constitutional or unconstitutional based solely on what they want it to say, not anything it actual says.

How exactly can we have prayer in school for 187 years and then without changing a single word it suddenly became unconstitutional?

The founders gave us the mechanisms to change it as society deemed necessary, but that requires actually changing it, not "changing" it by ignoring it as the dishonest and dishonorable Stevens does.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
That is the socialist/communist/democrat way. They know what is best for you and have no problem using the power of government and the bayonet to FORCE you to do what they deem best. They do not believe in Liberty or Freedom, they believe in big government telling you you must buy Obamacare, you must eat 'school' lunches, what size soda you are allowed to have, etc.

They believe in the Nanny state. And will shove a bayonet in your back to force their will upon you.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
It is truly amazing how THEY know better than WE and are damned and determined to make THEIR way the only way by removing OUR FREEDOMS. What is even more disgusting is that there are a lot of ignorant and complacent people out there that are willing to let the LEFT and the BIG GOV have their way all for the promise of FREE STUFF.

RE: Five New Words to The 2nd Amendment
These socialists/leftists are idiots. Government cannot provide anything for FREE!. What government does is confiscate from those that have to redistribute to those that want in return for votes.

Government does just about everything far worse than the private sector. It is always the most expensive option. Monopolies by their very nature never provide good value to consumers. State run ones are the worst of the monopolies.

Look at the 'Public Option' in education. A very poor product, with an exceptionally high cost. I ask you again, WHY is government involved in education, since there is ZERO mention in the Constitution about it?

But remember this, NOTHING Government provides is ever FREE. Imagine if everyone had to pay for the government services they alone used. No free rides. Then you would see a cry to get rid of government services.

Government spends about 52,000 per year per household. That means if your family didn't pay 52,000 in taxes, you are freeloading on someone else. Now if every single household paid their fair share, or was FORCED to, the Second American revolution would already be here!
