Do any of you have Medical Books you recommend?
I have 3 that I'd recommend:
Ditch Medicine (Hugh L. Coffee)
The Survival Medicine Handbook (Joseph Alton)
Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook (really intended for medical professionals)
I consider these the real basics. Any others you would recommend?

Do these start off pretty basic? Or pretty much need to have taken a class and have done background to understand?

Ditch Medicine in my opinion is for a lay person. It provides detailed pictures of things and is pretty much field based medicine (assumes drug availability and supplies). A lot is battle field type medicine. I can understand it so, and I have no prior medical training other than some first aid.
The other two books are geared more for the medical profession thrust into a post SHTF secenario and battlefield issues.
Still a wealth of medical information.

I have a few basic book's but nothing more than what you would find in a first aid kit. I feel a class would be of great benefit for me.
If your forced into helping another person, if they're conscious be sure to ask if they have and or are being treated for any type of medical condition. This can be a life saver so you don't do something that may aggravate an ongoing health issue. If the person is unconscious, look for medical tags, wrist bands or information in their wallet. I have a health issue and I don't wear anything to alert EMT or anyone else. I'm ordering dog tags to alert of my condition tonight.

We'll be doing the American Heart association course in this winter.
Red Dot Arms will be offering a 9 hour intensive first Aid Class with in-depth American Heart Association CPR with emphasis on trauma training. The first six hours will be the AHA guidelines for First Aid and CPR. The final 2 hours will be based on the TCCC guidelines for stopping life threatening bleeding. The focus will be how to use a tourniquet and a pressure bandage to stop life threatening bleeding. Anyone who is planning on carrying a concealed weapon should also have the knowledge, skill and ability to control bleeding and or have the ability to respond to an emergency. It will not do you any good to use a weapon to defend yourself, only to die from a wound you received in the confrontation.

I'm in for that class as well.

That's is a method of initial contact and information gathering designed to be handed to an EMT after they arrive. Again, it is designed around the idea of being in a remote wilderness where you would do things that you normally would wait for someone qualified, but no one is around.
In general learning first aid from a book is a lot like learning karate. Remember the karate kid when Mr Miyagi walk in on Daniel doing kicks in front a book and said "You learn karate from book?"
What he wanted to say is "He who learn karate from book, meet nice nurse some day"

Yeah without hands on it doesn't go very far... But better than nothing till I can get a little more training. Still haven't bought a first aid kit yet either, but those will probably be the next thing I purchase.
