I Like the Mossberg line for home defense over the Remington (or any other brand for that matter). Mossberg uses dual extractors in their guns, which provide very reliable extraction... in the event that one fails, there is an alternate. The Remingtons have a single extractor, so if you have an extractor failure, you now have to clear the malfunction. plus, the Mossbergs are really affordable and better looking, imo.

Or check out the Maverick 88 (basically a Mossberg 500 but with a cross bolt safety, not drilled for scope mounts and no sling mounts). Even more affordable...

The Mossberg Marine version is always recommended on many prepper sites... Maybe, if after I take the shotgun class in October, and I like them, I might have to have a 2nd one...

The beauty of the remington 870 is that there are ton of them out there, so as a prepping solution, there will always be part as the design hasn't change it some time. I love my 870. I personally don't like how flimsy the action feels on the 500. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I already have an 870. So I will use that for the shotgun class. Would it kill me to have a second shotgun? I figure I'd then have the 2 most popular ones...

Nope I have 3 shotguns, and I plan on purchasing more in the future. I started with an 870 as well

But when it comes to home defense shot guns, I like my stoger uplander. It's a 20 gauge sxs. The thing I like about it is the safety. It engages any time you open and close the gun. And it's a switch you just need to press up on. It's something I have developed muscle memory for so it's second nature. The 870 has the button safety, but I don't nearly use it as much so I would think under a higher stress situation that could be an issue

hmmm... I think when you rack the shell, that has deterrent value. Nothing says RUN like that sound. I still prefer a pistol for home defense, but a shotgun will take down someone every time.

I guess I am old fashioned. I don't keep a round racked in the shotgun. I do keep a round in the pipe with the pistol, but I do leave the manual safety on. I am always concerned with wall penetration. I have neighbors within 50 yards. And the standard construction walls around here offer no ballistic protection. I am using hollow points, in the hopes that a couple walls would break them up. Am I right in that?

Interesting test?

Hollow point will only expand if they hit soft matter before hitting the wall. THerefore, if the round hits the bad guy, it will expand and it's velocitiy will dissipate when it hits the wall. If you hit the wall first, the hole in the tip will fill with matter and not expand from that point on.

Ok... picked up a couple of boxes of 'Guard Dog' 9mm. They are really not as expensive as I thought. I will load an FXS-9 and LC9S mag with them. I will also want to run some through the guns first to make sure the firearms like them.

Thanks for the advice.

I use those rounds for my XDs .45 as well and so far I really like them. I've had a hard time finding them at times but it's worth it when I do.

Anybody have an opinion on the guard dog vs. The critical duty/critical defense from Hornady?

I know the Hornady puts material in the center of the hollow point, but unlike the guard dog, it would still need to hit something soft before it would expand, right?
