There aren't many places at this time that allow that type of shooting sad I can't wait for RDA to have training ranges.

Fact. I'm going to try and read up on it a little bit and see if I can practice a little bit dry firing

Mike, I have this crazy idea, that when I retire in 5-6 years of moving down to Texas an opening a range. Does the NRA offer any training classes on this? Range Safety Officer or Range management? Why not get the certifications before then?

I think appleseed has a pistol class every so often. If it's anything like their rifle courses I would think they would cover that

OK, Mike, I have looked over the NRA classes.

This is what I have found:

NRA Range Development and Operations course. Online, $300, and no prerequisites.

NRA Range Safety Officer. Online, $125, and Must have NRA Instructor rating in one or more disciplines.

So the hard part appears to be the NRA Instructor rating. This means learning the NRA way to teach safety and proper shooting methods. Plus being able to actually teach a course (No small feat). So, I guess, if I really want to be a Range Safety Officer, I would need to complete this training, even if I don't really desire to teach a class.

What would you recommend I do to achieve this status? Remember I have to overcome decades of doing things wrong. I have 5 years or so to accomplish this task. My current plan is to take the Self-Defense in and out of the home, the basic shotgun course and now I am thinking the basic rifle course as well. Do you know of an instructor training class in the area?

Ugh, so much to unlearn.

That's a rough but pretty solid goal! In interested in the steps you'll take to get where you feel comfortable and 'ready'. If any of us are truly ready for such a large undertaking!

As in the range and all your plans, hitting all those goals plus the training

Ken, what i sent you was info on the Range conference. They have 2 of them a year. I've been, and you do learn a lot. Why not stay here in Illinois and work with RDA to build a range.

Talk to me the next time you are in the shop.

Oh, I'll be here until I retire. Right now my plan is to retire in 6 years. Until then, I'd do anything I could to help you build a range here. Hell, it would be great experience for doing it down in Texas.

Prone has several different variants which depending on terrain/cover etc can come into play. Flat, chest down on the ground is what most people think of, but it does not always work for people who have accumulated some beers and pizzas along the way of life. If you are chest down then see if you have to raise gun off the ground with bent elbows or if you can put the butt on the ground for utmost stability. Most people have to raise it up to eye level. Breathing, like prone rifle, becomes another bit of annoying movement if you are chest down. You can draw up one leg/bent knee to slightly elevate your lungs off the ground and reduce some of the breathing movements.
Instead of full chest on ground you can roll slightly on to strong side keeping strong arm on as much on the ground as you can supported by the weak arm. This position can allow you to cant your head over quite a bit reducing profile and you may be able to ground the gun with the weak hand under the bottom of the magwell. Body types make a big difference.
