So I ordered a Mossberg 535 that should be in this week, and I'd like some suggestions for any equipment that you guys found useful for your shotty. Anything from types of ammo to try out or avoid, shell carriers, cleaning supplies, attachments, ect.

As far as what I want to use it for, is going to have to fill a couple of different roles until I can afford a dedicated hunting gun, and home defense. So I'm planning on getting a 20" barrel for keeping at home, and I'll have the 24 or 28 for if I go out hunting.

So far I want to get some snap cap dummy rounds, a bore snake and a case. I want to get some sabot slugs as well so I can use it at bass pro a little bit. But any suggestions for preferred brands for screwing around, and preferred brand for hunting ect.

I've been picking around on other forums and websites, but still working on sifting through all of the variety there is for these guns.Thumbs up

If it's not a rifled barrel you don't need sabot slugs, you can use regular slugs. And also if you do shoot slugs keep your choke in. If you don't you will damage the threads. When it cones to brands of ammo federal is my cheap brand if choice. Remington never seems to pattern right for me. I am becoming a bigger fan of Nobel and fiochi they shoot a lot cleaner. Also if it's bird hunting get a few chokes take it to the range to break a few clays see what works for you. Also you may want to look at balistol as a cleaner I love that stuff

It does have a rifled 24" barrel, and the longer one does have a couple chokes with it, which is another thing I need to work on in general. I know the concept behind them, I just need to use them a good bit. I'm definitely going to try to go shoot at some clays and see how that goes.. Just need to find the right shot to start out with! I'll probably pick up a variety from federal and maybe a box or two of those others to try out.

Is there a good size shot to start out with for bird hunting? I know there's a lot of factors, but when I go to buy some ammo if there's a better one to get some extra of I'll do that. Also I can chamber up to 3-1/2" shells, I was thinking of getting some of each, but figured the 3" would be a good size to stock?

When it comes to the chokes there are 2 things one is at bristol and most other shot gun ranges. There is as patterning board. Where you can place up a piece of paper. And fire one shell at it, than you can try again with another choke. Or shell to get an idea of how it is hitting. When it comes to what she'll it depends what birds you are looking to hunt. It goes from dove to Turkey. But with a lot if hunting rounds you can't shoot trap with them. So you want to get something that says target on it. Than comes the whole idea of shot size. Normally the idea the larger the shot size the less deformation in the round which equates to a more uniform patterning, I believe. I think in the end it seems more like it comes down to prefference. Ultimately people say you should pick one brand and size and stick with it. But in reality most people including myself buy what us on sale

Take caution with chokes and slugs, the tighter the choke the more pressure you are putting in the barrel/action. This could lead to problems...

That's good to hear. I'll definitely be making use of the pattern board... I'll probably buy as much of a variety as I can to try out and make note of all of it. I'll get a good amount of target rounds, and then a mixture of different sizes, probably focusing on something towards duck out goose. I think one of the best parts will be trying out different kinds of ammo and recording different results..

Sure just a fyi you may want to check with the range in what loads they will allow on the patterning board.

Yeah I'll keep that in mind when I get the chance to head up there. I just bought a variety of shots to try out. So I'm excited about getting the gun in and trying it out!

And I'll keep that in mind if I happen to put any slugs through the smooth bore barrel. Sounds like something I'll just avoid for now!
