Wow, I guess then RDA Forum may suffer even more than it is now?

State Sen. Kevin Parker says he hopes his proposal sparks discussion about how to balance public safety and online privacy. The Brooklyn Democrat noted that mass killers often provide warning signs through their social media posts, as in the case of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting suspect, who ranted online that Jews were “children of Satan.”

“It’s a new time. It’s a new technology,” Parker said. “It’s time that we in fact start having that conversation about how we monitor social media in a way that we can create safety for our communities.”

Next they will want your thoughts...or do they already?

I don't think the RDA forums qualify as social media. There are thousands of forums from the days of internet bulletin boards. It would be difficult to find them all. Where as Facebook, Twitter, etc are more centralized and data mined.

Well I hate to disagree but Websters has the Definition of social media

: forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos).

Or Social media is computer-based technology which facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content.

Or Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the different types of social media.

I will add my two cents worth: It really will be what or how they define it based upon their collective thoughts, wants or needs to fit any particular situation that may arise to fit any circumstance they deem relative.

This would come down to what laws like this always come down to...can they get a law passed where the wording is general and vague enough that a judge can later "fill in the blanks" and say it means whatever the judge wants it to say.

As far as the technology, the website, whether Facebook, a forum, etc., is just an interface. The post and who posted it is data in a database, and unless you drop the hard drive where it's stored in acid or burn it alive, someone can get at that data. It just comes down to how much power and effort the government is willing to exert to get at it and how much punishment they want to inflict if you destroy it before they do.

And don't kid yourself. This IS coming. The only question is how much will get here before we are dead.
