OK, thankfully far as I know the list of ones I've looked at and liked I don't think any of them were.. But I'll be paying attention now for that

Good deal. They have a tendency to crack at the rear takedown pins. Although, Omni's new line of poly lowers are reinforced with steel at the stress points. Im curious to see how they hols up. But in my mind, they are just shifting the stress point by reinforcing part of the lower. I guess time will tell.

Generally you're right, and it usually end up about the same. I think I'd stay away from it anyway... Maybe something to try if I get a second one... Haha but for my first is rather go with a tried and true

Now see, I have a couple AR's already, so I'd be more inclined to try to do the build to learn from it. Might help if your weapon ever failed to go bang cause it broke, if you knew what the part was called, and how to fix it. You could learn a ton about quality components also, and other trade offs. I figure I am never going to wear out a barrel of any of my guns. But if I were younger, I'd want to learn more, and be able to replace or fix the weapon.

Exactly why I love doing builds! Dont have to rely on someone else to fix my stuff. Smile

I do marvel at some of the preppers I have met that have nice weapons, and even complete sets of replacement parts, but if they had to fix something broken, I don't think they could do it, and they don't have any of the tools either. That would be one reason even at my age, I am thinking the build would be the better option. I mean, I could change out some stuff, like triggers, but I doubt I could change out the barrel or the gas block.

Knowledge is more key if SHTF. You are not likely to find a gunsmith around.

Fact. And I would love being able to say I've done it myself. I know it'll be a lot of work and if have to be very diligent about keeping everything organized. But it's a very viable plan. Plus it be easier on the bank account... I guess it depends what all I decide I want

The cost is my favorite part about building. You can do it very little at a time, as slow as you want. Plus it is much cheaper to customize one your way than to buy one that way.

True! How many guys like me, have bought an AR platform and then proceeded to change out all the parts we didn't like? Plus you can do this at your own pace. My reason for buying the whole and customizing it, has always been you have something to shoot right away and can test it out. But there is a high cost for doing it that way. I bet you might be able to save near a third or more off the cost.

If I do decide on building the ar, could any of you guys give a decent list of tools I would need for it? I've always hate buying prebuilt kits because I never use half of it, or would have preferred a different tool ect. Or even if you just have a brand that you looked using for it if there's a lot of stuff. That's one thing I haven't actually looked it

Get a small brass hammer, a punch set, and a small flathead screwdriver. I don't use a vice or blocks when I build. That stuff is pretty unnecessary.

Pretty much exactly what I need to know. Plus those are fairly common tools needed for a lot of different work. So you can't really go wrong

I'd recommend a barrel nut wrench too. Depending on the level of parts you plan to buy/replace.

Ahh, yes I forgot about the castle nut wrench. You can get those for about 5-10 dollars online or at guns shows. (or just borrow mine when you need it).

See what I mean, he knows what that tool is really called. I've changed out one barrel and could do it in a pinch, but he knows the right names.

There are also some pretty inexpensive armorer tools available which will include all the necessary things for your build, Including a torque wrench.

Recommendations? I have some huge automotive torch wrenches, but I am pretty sure some of those would not be recommended.

That would be awesome. You guys will be the first to know if/when I start that. This winter I'll be saving and researching what the spent points of each are and what I'm looking for. Hopefully I'll get around to actually making a detailed list of what I'm looking at so I can look at it a bit easier!

I might do the same just to learn from it... Maybe I will start with the that Palmetto receiver, for like $60... My biggest fear is that gun parts could be like car parts. i.e. the price of the pieces exceeds that of the whole. And I am not sure at what level I want to buy all the parts for. Like a lower parts kit, seems better than buying all the parts individually. I think you are right, this will be a good winter project to do the research on!

I am planning on getting some kits like you mentioned... At least this far. But that's probably one of those things I should price out in my list just so I know which I prefer.
