So, I have seen different opinions about bump stocks and should they be legal or not and the NRA's stand on making them illegal. Some say they are only good for one thing. Rapid fire on a "victim(s)".

Others say, if you give in here, then you have opened up the door to making other thing illegal. That the 2nd amendment is about the ternary of the government and if it helps you defend yourself, then they should be available.

What is your opinion?

Personally, I don't own one, nor do I want one. I have tried one, and found after the first round none were on paper after about a dozen. I have zero need for full auto. I can only see a minor need in full combat. On a .308 platform the weapon becomes uncontrollable. I think they will be impossible to ban. To easy yo make such a device. Ammunition is to expensive for me to want full auto (although I do recommend trying the full auto experience in Vegas sometime with a .30 caliber MG). Now on to the question. I feel why bother. Someone as smart as the Vegas shooter could have modified a standard AR15 to full auto. I would wager any gun smith could perform this surgery as well. Many parts on AR15's are already military grade for full auto. So I think illegal full auto is not that hard to come by if you really want it, and are willing to break laws to do it (I'm not). But I do agree this is a slippery slope.

I certainly understand and appreciate the slippery slope position. However as we know the left is all about appearance rather than substance. I've never used a bump stock so am speaking about something I know little about (hey does that qualify me to be a democrat?). I think the NRA should not actively support banning bump stocks, but should not oppose it either, just leave it to congress, this is not something the NRA can come up smelling of roses either way.

I do think that if anyone wanted to kill in mass, that they would find a way to do it. Be it a bumpstock, pressure cooker, or a boxcutter on a plane. It is over time that we stop looking at the devise and look at the mentally sick person, that it seems to always be if not a jihadist. I'm not sure how you would do it, but to not give the person the fame of being all over the news. Then I think it's time to look at the medicines that cause these kinds of side effects. I know someone on facebook that I was concerned about enough to call their local police and report their depressed psychotic behavior. The officers knew about this guy and he was going to talk to him.

Lisa, People today don't know much about history of mental illness here in the USA. We used to have hundreds of thousands of mental inmates in hospitals (Dunning in Chicago had 12,000 inmates at one time, Bellview in NYC even more). In the 70's George McGovern, a democrat, brought a case all the way to the SCOTUS. HE won. Basically all the inmates in the loony bins had to be released, as they had not committed a crime YET, even though a judge thought them too dangerous to the public. This is the main reason loons are free today. We have to wait for them to commit a horrible crime. Thanks Democrats.

Because the system is set to protect the criminals and not the safety of people. Yeah...

The only reason that nutjob was able to kill as many as he did with a bumpfire stock equipped rifle was because of how concentrated people were into a small area. There is still some debate over whether it was actually one of the bumpfire equipped rifles that was even used. He had 12 with those stocks but he had other rifles that didn't. The NRA should have kept their mouths shut and I won't give them another penny until they make some serious changes, starting with the termination or resignation of Wayne LaPierre. In case you haven't noticed, I changed my avatar from the NRA pin I was using.

They're not just coming for bumpfire stocks now. The proposed bill calls for the banning of any item that increases the rate of fire on a semi-auto rifle and does not mention bumpfire stocks one single time. What baseline is to be used isn't mentioned. This bill could be interpreted to ban any fcg, or part thereof, that is not "milspec". If it passes and you own a competition trigger, which you have in a 3 gun equipped AR, that you don't turn in within a set time frame; you're now a felon and there is no provision in the bill for grandfathering in items already owned.

A number of YouTube firearms content creators are trying to get rallies started in all 50 state capitals on November 5th to show opposition to all of the gun-control bills proposed after the Las Vegas murders. You can find more information on this from the following videos and Facebook page:

I see your point. I normally install Geissele SSA-E triggers in all my AR15/10 platforms. The trigger pull is two stage and 3.5 lbs. It is a great help in long range target shooting. I am sure they would say it increases the rate of fire. Which is probably true. I would ignore such laws and attempts to regulate firearms. I am sure that if the 1934 Firearms act came before the SCOTUS it would be struck down.

Firearms are inanimate objects. It requires someone willing to commit murder to use one to attack another. These are either loons or criminals. Almost always democrats. We don't have a firearm problem, we have a democrat problem.

Mr. White, thank you for posting this.
It is not just abut the "bump stock", which to me is a cheap thrill device so one can see "kind of" what "full auto" is "kind of" like. I had a very long talk with a friend who is recently retired from the military and he is Special Forces. While overseas he saw a lot of combat in urban environments. It really gave me a different look at Vegas.

You really do not need a device to bump your stock into a perceived full auto configuration. My son was doing it way before this device was available to the public and yes, there are enough parts out there that if configured correctly, will make an AR/AK full auto and YES that is illegal.

Interest in bump stocks surged in the wake of the Vegas shooting on Sunday, October 1, but it almost as quickly faded. By October 14 -- less than two weeks after the shooting -- the search interest in bump stocks was back to pre-shooting levels. Source CNN

"This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Automatic Gunfire Prevention Act’’.
"a trigger crank, a bump-fire device, or any part, combination of parts, component, device, attachment, or accessory that is designed or functions to accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle but not convert the semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun".

So what if you have polished your trigger and have a really fast finger?

If you have polished your trigger, you have modified it and would be in violation of that bill. I feel sorry for Jerry Miculek because he's going to have to cut off his trigger finger.
