I came back from the range. I shoot two round of Nobel 9 1/2 and a federal 8. My shotgun was way dirtier than it normally is after shooting. Both are similarly priced. I have been shooting Nobel shot as of lately. This is the first time in a while I have shot federal, is federal just a dirtier shell or am I missing something here

I too have found the Nobel shells to be very clean burning. As there are several grades of Federal shells, I have found the less expensive one to be not quite as clean burning. The Winchester AA shells are always a good bet but they are more expensive. Be sure to use a good shotgun bore cleaner like Remington Shotgun Cleaner after you are done. A couple of passes through the barrel with a bore snake makes your job a lot easier.

How is cleaning a shotgun different from cleaning a rifle? I'm a big fan of CLP. Is it proper to give it a light coat of oil when done? Excuse the ignorance, it may be a dumb question. I never seem to know what is the right amount of lubrication and corrosion protection for any weapon. About the only thing I know is that AR's like to be run wet.

Great question! Most aspects of cleaning the shotgun are very similar to that in cleaning a rifle except for one critical step. The plastic wadding used in shotgun shells can leave a residue in the barrel which can affect performance and function. Most of the conventional gun cleaners will not to an adequate job of removing that. You should use a shotgun specific bore cleaner to remove that residue first. Then you may continue with you cleaning and lube product of choice. Good shooting!
P.S. in most shotgun when it comes to oil, less is more!

Not being a shotgun guy, this is great advice! Thanks, you learn something everyday!

Oh, I have a Remington 870. Have not even fired it yet. I have it cause my buddies all tell me I have to have a shotgun. I do admire the Mossberg 500 Marine too every time I see one. I plan to take their shotgun class in October. Something about the sound of racking a shotgun shell just makes my day. Besides, McMiller has a lot of shotgun options.

I think the worst shells were the Peter's brand I picked up about 2 years ago each time you shot a round it smelled like one one passed gas. I noticed gun club seems to be clean. But I don't break ad many clays maybe it patterns differently. Or maybe I am superstitious. I am always hesitant when it comes to mossberg shotguns. I just always read about problems.
