1. Your paranoia about people knowing you have a gun, will often give away that fact that you have a gun. Nobody knows, relax.
2. Your firearm is a LAST resort. Don't be a hero, in most cases, be a good witness, use your phone instead of your gun. You will know the proper time when you need to draw.
3. Get concealed carry insurance, incase you do have to use it, you WILL be taken to court civilly.
One extra - 4. just because Illinois has more training standards than the rest of the U.S. does not mean we are all trained enough to carry a gun. keep up with your range time and seek as much training as you can (like Mike said).
"Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars."

So true and it's not just hands on training, it's reading anything and everything.

Absolutely, you really need to know the lay of the land and know all the rules for one thing. I get some question by folks carrying that should know the answer if they have a gun on them. Undecided

All good advice. It is one thing to go to a range and shoot accurately, it is another to have to actually draw. The comments about being a good witness make a lot of sense, and being able to remain cool under the situation and to make an intelligent decision about if to draw makes a lot of sense.
