At the Illinois State Fair last week, I went into Conservation World expecting to learn about natural resources and Illinois parks.
Instead, I came upon an exhibit called JAKES Take Aim — a portable firing range set up for young people to shoot a few rounds without charge.
-----------------
I contacted the fair and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, questioning inclusion of this exhibitor. I do not think it is appropriate to try to persuade young people that guns are not inherently dangerous and pretend a firing range is an amusement.

Response to the above letter:
The National Wild Turkey Federation is made up of sportsmen, women and children who care deeply about our natural resources and wild places. We know hunting and conservation go hand in hand and that is the foundation of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.
This model, developed over the last 100 years, has effectively restored wildlife to its highest level in the last century. That restoration was made possible by hunters, anglers and shooting sports participants.
The overwhelming majority of conservation funding comes from the sale of hunting licenses and excise taxes on the sale of firearms and ammunition. These taxes alone count for approximately $200 million a year.
But our mission to preserve our hunting heritage is about more than just hunting. It’s a lifestyle — a love for the outdoors and a passion to see future generations carry on the tradition. And the future of conservation depends on youth carrying on this country’s heritage of hunting and shooting sports.
