Working in a gun shop, I can agree a bit with these people but at the same time disagree. I feel like there are some rights and wrongs but it should not be totally taboo.

I personally do not might people using their guns to find the right holster or whatever the question is but theres a proper way to do it. How i like to approach this, is to find which gun they need a holster for. If we have the gun in stock then we use our gun which makes this whole issue no longer an issue. Now, if we do not have it then i will instruct the customer to take out there gun. Always announce that you are taking your gun out. We high appreciate the heads up and will welcome it. Then safety unload it.

We do have an issue when someone unholsters their gun without telling us because we do not know their intentions. Its a great way to scare us and have us reach for our gun. We do not want to draw on gun on customers but at the same time simply cannot take the chance sometimes.

What do you guys think about this video? Is there a middle ground or should it be completely taboo?

In all the classes I have taken at RDA, safety has always been stressed. Certainly for the CCW and AR basic courses all firearms are rendered inoperable. This means that I as a customer am also safe. RDA owners can set their own rules, its their shop. I have taken a magazine for my FNS9 into the shop when looking for a mag pouch, and the staff asked if I had one to try. I knew I was coming in to buy a pouch, so made sure it was empty and not in the gun. Customers should respect the safety of shop workers and plan ahead. Certainly no one should pull out a gun without telling anyone they are going to do so, unless in am emergency.

Two things, first I have done 90% of my training with Red Dot, so it would be quite embarrassing to do something stupid, you know I have been trained better. Smile

Second, the rules I live by are:

1. If the gun is not in use, I carry it in a case in accordance with all transportation laws. If I am going to look for accessories or need to show it to you guys, it shows up in a case, unloaded, ammo not in the case, and the action open.

2. If the gun is "in use", it stays in the holster unless I am ready to shoot it. Loaded or not is irrelevant (unless I intend to shoot it then unloaded is stupid).

What is a gun "in use"?

Any gun not in my house and not in a case. And a gun "in use" should be loaded, in a holster, and not removed from the holster until ready to shoot.

And that includes traffic stops. If an officer asks to see my gun or take my gun, my response will be no, it is loaded and will not come out of the holster unless I intend to shoot.

I have not come into RDA without my CCW firearm holstered since I completed my CCW training there. It remains holstered, period. If I was coming in with a weapon question regarding my CCW firearm, I would bring it in unloaded, action open, and CASED. The last thing I would ever want is for any other customer or employee of RDA to feel the least bit threatened. In this way the weapon can be easily safety checked by the RDA employee BEFORE any such custom fitting or issues are discussed. I've never had a problem.

I wish everyone was like that. Its happens a few times a month that someone just unholsters without any warning. Its always a scary feeling.

I have one cursed at one customer in 3+ years of the shop being opened.

This particular customer shakes so much that he's been name "Shaky Mike", (Mike is not his real name, but didn't want to use his name). He wanted a versa clip on his carry gun, and took a loaded gun, pointing it direclty at me with horrible tremure. I could help but yell, "WHAT THE f%@#$ ARE YOU DOING". Later that day, I couldn't help but wonder how many more of our students just didn't get it. He had taken his 16 hours of training with us, what could we have done different.

I really couldn't come up with anything other than being bold with people. Some folks just don't get it. I've seen this individual a few times since. I'm always polite, but now, he guns it in his pants. Smile

As for the video, WOW. I've checked a boat load of firearms in 3 years, and I've only found 2 loaded chambers. I'm sure lucky that we offer training for our customers and we can't fill the bottom of a jar like that.

The 2 guns that were loaded, were two students doing the CCL, so in RDA's defense, they hadn't taken any of our training.

I have had a few customers (who were not students) go to pull their gun to show someone or try and get a fitting on a holster. Each time i saw them reaching i would stop them and say if they are going to pull, do it slowly and next time alert me before hand. I have gotten close to drawing down on someone ONCE and luckily for both of us when he realized what he was about to do he stopped and i was able to relax. I dont mind people using their carry gun to size up accessories but for the love of god let someone know!
