"Gun stores may also be willing to cut a deal on a .40 that's just taking up cabinet space".

While I do like my 40's and my 9's I don't think stores are going to have a fire sale on 40 cal handguns.

I've seen that trend too... For some reason the .40 Short & Weak has fallen out of favor. It seems to make bigger holes than 9mm, have about the same penetration, but maybe locally it is out of favor. Besides, I have heard that gun stores can have .40 S&W models almost overnight. In smaller guns, .40 can be a snappy round, but I see nothing wrong with it in full size guns.

40's are not the prefered handgun of law enforcement. They suggest the 9MM. Many smaller framed people, and even some normal framed people have a hard time hitting the target with 40's. Although powerful, the recoil gets away from them. That is what I have heard customers say to me and have discussed with the shop guys.

Given a recent story here of a cop needing 33 rounds to score a hit on a suspect, I do feel 9mm is probably a better choice for law enforcement. What if the officer had two bad guys? As to the .40S&W it is snappy in smaller handguns. I've not noticed it as much in full sized handgun. I think the caliber has merit for law enforcement. As does .45ACP. I really don't think you can go too wrong with any of these calibers.

I'd be more concerned that the gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger. All 3 calibers have their fans. And for the record, I own and shoot all 3.

I also own and shoot all three and to add to that, the 380. I like my 40, my 45, my 9 and my 380 and have all 4 of them in CC pistols. I love the variety (accessorize)and I have no issues with the handling of these during training. If you really need that many rounds (I usually have just two mags), I better train harder to shoot better.

I recently purchased a S&W M&P Shield in .40 that I have put around 200 rounds of Wolf 180 grain HPs , actually made by Prvi Partizan, through. I don't find it too much harder to handle, with the 7 round extended mag or the pinky extension on the 6 round mag, than my full sized HK USP. The Shield, when using the standard 6 round mag sans pinky extension, is very comparable to my friend's USP compact. It may have to do with both using a double captive recoil spring, ie. they both use a double recoil spring setup as does the full sized USP. In my personal opinion, the .40 is easier to handle than 9mm +P rounds which is what a lot of law enforcement agencies that use the 9mm use, including the FBI. If you use a weapon built around the .40, as both the USP and M&P lines are, there is not going to be as much wear and tear on the firearm, when using .40 or 9mm +P. The FBI is in for a rude awakening when they see their new Glocks, firing the 9mm +P rounds, have the same amount of wear as their retired ones in .40. It should be noted that the FBI wanted to adopt the Sig 320, just as the US Army did, but the bean counters in Washington stuck them with the Glock because they outbid Sig. If the FBI had required a manual safety, as the army did, they may have got the Sig, as Glock lost their bid for the army contract in large part because they refused to incorporate the manual safety the army wanted.

With all that said, my next handgun purchase will probably be one chambered in .357 Sig. I find it to be superior to both 9mm and .40 S&W. The nice thing about the .40 versions of the USP and Shield is the fact that .357 Sig barrels are available for both and those calibers use the same magazines. With the right loading the .357 Sig hits with the same force as one of the lower power .357 Magnum loads.

I thought about that too... I tried some other options .45ACP +. I have even purchased a couple 10mm handguns. I love the 10mm round. However, I purchased a Rock Island Arms 10mm Double stack (Model 52009) with a 5 inch barrel and a Glock 40. I have found both are great handguns, but the Rock Island is heavy, and the Glock is too bulky for CCW.

Instead I purchased a FNS9C with 12+1 9mm capacity. It's still small enough for CCW. Much more so than a Glock 19. And the backup magazines are 17 rounds. I still like my Ruger LC9S, but I think the 7+1 is barely OK.

And recently Sportsman Guide is selling .40 Cal (14+1) FNS-40's for $332. This is an incredible price for a top quality handgun in .40 cal. I am not sure why the sudden fire sale prices on .40 cal. Yes there is a new FN-509 in 9mm, maybe they feel there will be a newer .40 available soon? If you don't hate .40 cal, this is a great price.
