Setting aside the general stupidity of his actions that night:

1. A loaded firearm never leaves its holster until you are ready to shoot.

2. Always keep your firearms under your control, even if they are somewhere else, keep them locked, and keep the key.

I think I learned this at Red Dot.

Well given the circumstances, I don't think a 20 year veteran deserved to be fired over this. It is hard to keep someone from killing themselves if you know they are suicidal. He didn't. He was only negligent in providing the opportunity. She was an adult. Would the board have fired him if it was his wife? Doubtful. Given the circumstances and his career and pension, I think the Superintendent was correct and I think the suspension was warranted.

I think you need to consider his 20 years of good service in applying a punishment for what basically had zero criminal intent.

Sounds to me like he should be under investigation for murder. The circumstances are too strange. He met this woman on duty, presumably on a call (because if she were unstable enough to shoot herself, chances are that he did not meet her under positive circumstance). If he DID meet her in a positive manner like at a Dunkin Donuts while on duty or something, why, if they this were a positive experience, would she take her own life? He went to her house for a good time and she shoots herself?... Something smells like crap. I know stranger things have happened but I'm curious to know how much investigation went in to this "suicide", especially being a 20 year vet of the department. He was probably pretty close with that McCarthy, who may be protecting him? Perhaps he knows a few things about McCarthy?

Possible... I assumed from the article that there was a through investigation. If not, the state's attorney should be looking into it.

But if the story is truthful, I don't think firing is warranted. You have to forgive me, it's been a decade since I lived in Chicago, so I have forgotten the level of corruption there...
