I saw an old thread where fromtheplaines was asking about if RDA does an AK class and I thought I'd post this for all of you in the Chicago area. AK Operators Union Local, 47-74 has a 2 day class coming up in November in the Washburn area. Cost of the class is $400+$50 range fee. More info can be found at:

Yea I have thought about going to one of their classes. Currently my aks sights are messed up so I don't think I would be able to get the most if it. But thanks for the heads up.

I never thought I would see AK and Marksman in the same sentence Lol

Awesome sounding class, though!

Two of the instructors for the class are former Spetsnaz instructors who work as contractors now. Rob Ski, who also instructs the class, is a former member of the Polish army and a current member of the Illinois National Guard. In short these guys are experts with the AK pattern rifle. One day I hope to be able to take one of their classes.

rwhite, Most Americans think of AK's as 'Spray and Pray' type rifles. You are educating us with preconceived ideas of AK's. Like any firearm, they can always be improved upon up to the level of the performance of the cartridge. I appreciate your comments on the platform. I would never have considered an AK as anything more than an submachine gun type weapon.

The fact the myth that says AKs are inaccurate still persists always amazes me. The off the rack AK is not as accurate as a precision AR-15 but they are as accurate as an off the rack AR. One of the side by side comparison tests that has been done had taken one of the worst AKs (I.O.) and ran it against one of the best AR-15s (Daniel Defense). That is going to skew the result in favor of the AR right from the word go. If you take a RAS47 from Century Arms or one of the mass produced rifles from DDI or Definitive Arms and put them against an off the rack AR-15 things won't be so clear cut. If you get a high end custom AK from Definitive, Rifle Dynamics, or Krebs and put them against a high end AR-15 and it becomes a dead heat. If the AK in question is a 74 pattern firing the 5.45x39mm round the AK will win. The 5.45x39mm is the superior round in the standard AK pattern rifle we just don't see as many rifles using it. The Obama ban on 7n6 ammo, the same type of ban that was stopped when it came to M855, doesn't help. The Vepr in 7.62x54R is a different animal altogether and is a good opponent for the AR-10. This also doesn't take into account the AKs that fire the AR-15's round. I've seen shooters with a Serb M85 SBR shoot that better than an AR-15 SBR with both using the same 5.56x45mm round. At any rate the myth of the AK as inaccurate is inaccurate.

I know the VEPR in 7.62x54R is very accurate (23" barrel). When I shot the VEPR I had a 3" group on paper at 100 yds with Iron sights standing. I think the Mosin is more accurate, but I was impressed as that was my first experience with it. I thought the C39 AK47 that I saw was of exceptional quality. I don't see much 5.45x39mm ammo anywhere, so I would shy away from it and stick with the 7.62x54R or the 7.62x39, which everyone has. The 7.62x54R is especially reasonable that a spam can had still be had for under $100. How well do AK & VEPR barrels hold up with corrosive ammo out of curiosity?

And I think the AK's have their reputation from all the untrained masses that have near zero idea that aimed fire is best. I've seen quite a few films from war zones whereby they don't even use the sights, and I am not talking close quarters combat but at ranges from 100-300 yards.

Keep them clean and they'll last forever. Just pour a little warm water or Windex down the barrel every 100 rounds or so when at the range and give it a cleaning when you get home. The main enemy of AK barrels is when you start getting ridiculously high round counts through them. There are people out there that have put 100,000+ rounds through an AK. At that point the barrel will have almost no rifling left if any. The Vepr isn't as susceptible to that as it uses the thicker RPK style barrel and has deeper rifling as a result. I think I'd start to keep an eye on the barrel in the rifle if I got anywhere near 25,000 rounds let alone 100,000.

You can still find 5.45x39mm online. SGAmmo is actually selling spam cans of 1080 rounds of 7n6 for under $220. They have crates of 2160 rounds for $429.50. Here's the current list of 5.45x39mm that AmmoSeek.com has:

http://ammoseek.com/ammo/5.45x39mm

As you can see from that list there is a lot of 5.45x39mm out there including offerings from Hornady, which are ridiculously accurate. The next AK I get is either going to be a Krinkov or an AK-74 pattern.
