Preferred torque for scope mounting?
The title pretty much says it all. When mounting a rifle scope on a .223, what is the recommended amount of torque on the ring screws?

Thanks.

RE: Preferred torque for scope mounting?
Depends on what the manufacture recommends... I have always used TPS rings (not cheap, but really top quality) I know the ring screws should be torqued at 12-15 in/lbs. and the 7/16" nut at 65 in/lbs. Luepold are 15-17 in/lbs. ring screws, and 55 in/lbs for the clamp screws. I am not sure the screw driver I use can measure the torque that accurately, so I am always careful.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a tool I borrowed called a FAT Wrench. It's basically a screwdriver that can be set to inch pounds. The guy I borrowed it from said he torques all of his scope rings to 20 inch pounds. As with most things, I always look for a second opinion. I'm a "measure twice, cut once" kind of guy.

It's a Simmons scope. I'll check with them.

It's the ring manufacturer who usually recommends the torque settings... I only have TPS (which I recommend) and Leupold rings. I have the same Fat Wrench. It is +/- 3 in lbs. I set it at 15.

BelieveIn308 is right, it does depend on the manufacturer. If you can't find specs for it in its manual, then tightening to no more than a 1/4 turn or 90 degrees past finger tight is a safe guideline.
