I was at the range today, and I was going to shoot a round of trap with a guy. He walked over to the rack and couldn't find his gun. He looked all up and down the line, and it wasn't there. A guy walked off with his 12k trap gun. You may think if that was me I wouldn't ever let it leave my sight. But I have left my 870 on the rack when I went to the bathroom or to get shells from my car. I just wanted to give everyone vs heads up.

What range? Usually someone at most ranges would question him. And a good range has a camera system that would be recording the firing line. Most ranges have cameras that record every car that enters and leaves. With a Felony theft, I am sure the cops will want that video. A gun range is a poor place to stage a felony robbery. Hope he recovers his shotgun.

Damn. That sucks.

I don't normally shoot alone, so I have extra eyes. Still, if everyone is shooting, their focus is on the line, not the guns in the rack.

I am also curious about what range this was. Do they have cameras?

"under your control"

Unfortunately, the meaning of this is probably the first thing people set aside from their thoughts when they leave training.

The gun was not under his control.

Dutz, when I go to the range, I usually bring 3 guns. Anyone can be distracted. Theft is theft. I think most ranges take security very seriously. If that range didn't have a security camera system, they should. Many insurance companies INSIST they do. I am still interested in what range this happened at. And what they are doing about it, in the future.

It was at Bristol, a guy put his gun on the rack and walked away. And another guy walked off with it. I think it had to be a guy who knew what he was doing. Since he picked nice gun, and not a very well known brand. It's pretty standard at shot gun ranges to rack your gun and go in a building or your car. So the victim didn't do anything to out of the ordinary. But I can imagine now if people are going to the bathroom a buddy will be watching the gun, or it will be locked in the car. I hope they catch the guy. When it comes to survalience cameras I haven't looked for them one way or another so I don't want to assume. I know the sheriff was called in since I saw the car. I will see if there is any news this weekend when I go.

A theft can happen at any range. I would hope Bristol does everything possible to catch this thief. And I would hope they institute at least some security measures to try to prevent this in the future. A simple camera recording the plate of every car coming and going, or a camera recording the gun racks. Even if just asking the range employees to keep a sharper eye out and write down plate numbers of anyone that acts suspicious.

I would call that the mid-western mindset, i.e. you trust people to be honest. I spent my childhood in Southern California and we didn't get into a parked car without checking the backseat and under the car, we never went next door without locking the house, and never went out after dark alone, not even next door. 40 years later I still tend toward things like that.

That's probably why the situational awareness concepts just seems normal to me.

Dutz, I grew up in Chicago, I did the same. In smaller towns and communities of the mid-west, I agree that mind set is very common. In the city, you are always thinking home security, and you are always aware.

The whole situation stinks. Hopefully they catch the guy and prosecute. While I agree you need to watch your own stuff, I am sure everybody at some point in their life trusted the location they were at. Unfortunately this can happen at your own house with friends you trust. This is a tough way to learn a lesson, luckily the piece of crap that stole it did not shoot anyone at the range.

I grew up in Cali where in the mid to late 60's we did not lock up all the time and we were constantly out after dark alone.

At one of our local ranges here (small town of 22k) it is very common to leave your gun on the bench/in the rack while going back to your vehicle. I just make it a point to let the RO know what I am doing. At the other range I shoot at I have left to go to the bathroom or back to my truck several times with no issues and there are no cameras. Only exception is that when we are shooting at one of the ranges we always introduce our selves with each person that is there.

The last time I went shooting in CA (June 2015) we had four rifles with us and two of them were on the bench behind us and two of them were with us in use. It is a busy place and at least, according to m brother, he has never had any issue with theft.

I was there from 1962-1974, you must have lived in a different area.

Update. Turns out the guy grabbed the wrong gun once he figured it out he returned it, so that was good news.

This is true. Oregon at first seemed like a great place and for the most part it is. The politics and the "Nanny State" mentality is killing me. The area is lush and beautiful. For the most part Oregon lets you be you and sometimes that where the issues come up. Can't have everything...
